4th gen Toyota 4runner locking differential

So I know that I have a open differential on my 2003 2wd 4runner sr5 and I am in the market for a locking differential but I have no idea on the options and types of diffs out there I really want one after I got stuck in sand last week and one wheel just kept on spinning. ..

Some 2wd 4Runners came with a locking rear differential from the factory so they weren't so worthless off road, grabbing one of those units would be your best bet. To be honest though, you'd be better off just selling your 4Runner and getting a 4wd truck.

Making a 2wd truck decent off road is like making a Cavalier fast - even if you succeed it's still going to suck compared to the vehicles that are meant to accomplish the task

Very true. Not worth putting a locking diff in a 2wd truck.

locking rear diff on a 2wd is a life saver. I had it on my 2wd silverado. Before it was an open diff, i regeared and then added a locker. Was a HUGE difference in my offroad ability. I dont know where you get off saying its worthless.

Having a locking diff. on a 2wd vehicle makes a world of difference and is money very well spent.

Maybe I rushed my post. Yes it's not worthless but I don't think it's cost efficient on a 2wd rig. If it a locker comes standard perfect, lots of new 2wd tacomas have a rear locker only. But adding one after I would not do.

Because you would not add one does not mean that it is not cost efficient. For someone who does not NEED a 4WD but needs to be able to not get stuck with one wheel spinning (rain, snow or trail) it is very well worth it. Especially if you do the install yourself.

Not trying to rustle feathers, but the ecotec motor is no slouch. The world's quickest 4 cyl uses that motor, and it just so happens it came in the cavalier. They easily hold their own when tuned.

2wd with a locker and capable driver can go 90% of the places most stock 4x4's can. Also, nothing wrong with converting to 4wd, many on here have done it.

I couldn't help but laugh inside when he made the statement about the Cavalier. I remembered reading an article in Summit Racing magazine years ago when the record was set.

Just about every auto maker has them. Dude check some facts or at least don't talk if you don't know what you're talking about.
