4th Generation Brake Caliper Question (Update w/ MOD)

Curious if anyone knows if the Sport Edition calipers will
fit standard SR5 with 17" 5-spoke wheels?

I have the infamous inner lower piston seize and want
to put in new caliper and rotors. I'd figured that I might
as well put in the bigger stuff if it fits.

This is a 2004 V6 SR5 with the factory 17-inch 5-spoke
star wheels.

Yes, they will fit. The Sport Edition comes with 17" wheels standard, so there's no reason that you can't put the Sport Edition calipers on your SR5 as long as you also have the 17" wheels.
 
I would also verify the hole spacing of the caliper mounting bolts. You should be able to measure this on an actual caliper before you buy it.

Do a search on this, it has been gone over several times before.

I would check, but I think you may have to replace the caliper mounting brackets also.
 
Well, I think I got my answer. Here is what the NAPA website
shows for calipers on the 16" wheel and 17" wheel, respectively:

As we can see, the little legs for mounting the caliper on are
somewhat longer on the 17"-wheel caliper.

I ordered the 17"-wheel calipers and rotors. I'll post pics and
let everyone know how it turns out. BTW, I measured the
stock rotor, and despite having 17"wheels from the factory,
my rotors are the smaller ones.

Now, what's NAPA going to say about the core charge... ;)

Well, I did the mod yesterday with only one small complication.

Here is the background: 2004 SR5 V6 with factory installed
17-inch wheels. The brake setup, however, is the standard
16-inch setup. The calipers developed the infamous frozen
piston on both (L & R) inner, lower pistons, hence the need
for replacement.

Seeing that the vehicle has 78,000 miles, I figured I'd swap the
rotors too. Now, why go with the original if I can go bigger
and use the Sport Edition 17-inch setup. I did do a search and
I can't seem to find anyone that swapped their calipers and
rotors this way.

I ordered NAPA's remanufactured calipers for the 17-inch wheel
along with their Ultra Premium rotors for the 17-inch wheel.

One of the rotors was made in U.S.A., the other one did not
say where it's made. One of the calipers (right one) look similar
to the factory caliper with the "AT" logo on it. The other one
does not have the "AT" logo and the bleeder valve has a
8mm nut instead of the 10mm nut.

The 17-inch wheel calipers fits the stock 16-wheel brackets
just fine. The 17-inch 5-spoke wheel also cleared the calipers
just fine.

The only problem was the dust shield. The new larger rotors'
edge hits the inner edge of the shield. When this happened
while doing this swap last night, I was exhausted, hungry,
and sort of felt the world is collapsing.

But then I got pissed and just bend the shit out of the shields
and sure enough, now there is excellent clearance. This was at
7pm, the local Toyota parts store was closed and I wasn't about
to loosen the 4 main bolts holding the bearing, etc. in place.

During this swap, I also changed out the brake hoses to stainless
steel ones from StopTech. Now, the StopTech lines comes in
these baggies that says Centric Parts on them. Doing a search
on Google shows that lots of different manufacturers seem to
have similar appearing stainless lines. I wonder if they are all
made by this Centric company and just re-labeled?

When everything was said and done the pedal was extremely
spongy/soft. I rebleed the system again this morning and sure
enough there were a bunch of bubbles on the right front rotor.

On the initial install last night, I made a pressure adaptor ala
other posters and used an air compressor to pump the fluid
out. The flow was good, but this morning I decided to use the
standard pump the pedal method and the flow seems to be
much stronger with the motor in the master cylinder driving
the fluid out.

The truck brakes fine now. I really don't feel any difference
using the larger brakes or the stainless lines. Just a slight sense
of achievement know that I saved a few $$$. I'll try to post
some pictures later.

great write up !!!!!!

this is what i like to see on forums. I think if this was done earlier some people may of bought limited or sr5's instead of sport models. i would of thought differently too. I also like to see that there is no big difference in them. the SS brake lines should make a little difference in longer drivec. when the brake fluid is hotter and ran longer. its good to see that some1 had the huevos to try an upgrade like this
 
It's hard to tell from the pics, but the two calipers look the same size other than the mounting holes. Are the 17" calipers actually bigger? Do they use a larger brake pad?

Also, what did you think about the quality of the NAPA calipers? Comparible to OEM?
 
I actually need two new rear rotors... do they come off easily?
I'm just gonna replace the stock ones... but I was wondering if all I have to do is remove the wheel, and the caliper to get it off and replace it?

Parts guy at local dealer told me the pads are the same size for SR5/Limited and Sport models even thought the rotor is bigger....... damn Toyota lol
 
got two Duralast Rotors from Autozone for about $90 bucks.. they also had a deal you could get 15% off if you bought pads... I didn't need any though.. mine are fine...

the rotors stopped grabbing, braking is smooth as silk now!! YAY!!!! they were really easy to take off also... two bolts per side...
