Well, I did the mod yesterday with only one small complication.
Here is the background: 2004 SR5 V6 with factory installed
17-inch wheels. The brake setup, however, is the standard
16-inch setup. The calipers developed the infamous frozen
piston on both (L & R) inner, lower pistons, hence the need
for replacement.
Seeing that the vehicle has 78,000 miles, I figured I'd swap the
rotors too. Now, why go with the original if I can go bigger
and use the Sport Edition 17-inch setup. I did do a search and
I can't seem to find anyone that swapped their calipers and
rotors this way.
I ordered NAPA's remanufactured calipers for the 17-inch wheel
along with their Ultra Premium rotors for the 17-inch wheel.
One of the rotors was made in U.S.A., the other one did not
say where it's made. One of the calipers (right one) look similar
to the factory caliper with the "AT" logo on it. The other one
does not have the "AT" logo and the bleeder valve has a
8mm nut instead of the 10mm nut.
The 17-inch wheel calipers fits the stock 16-wheel brackets
just fine. The 17-inch 5-spoke wheel also cleared the calipers
just fine.
The only problem was the dust shield. The new larger rotors'
edge hits the inner edge of the shield. When this happened
while doing this swap last night, I was exhausted, hungry,
and sort of felt the world is collapsing.
But then I got pissed and just bend the shit out of the shields
and sure enough, now there is excellent clearance. This was at
7pm, the local Toyota parts store was closed and I wasn't about
to loosen the 4 main bolts holding the bearing, etc. in place.
During this swap, I also changed out the brake hoses to stainless
steel ones from StopTech. Now, the StopTech lines comes in
these baggies that says Centric Parts on them. Doing a search
on Google shows that lots of different manufacturers seem to
have similar appearing stainless lines. I wonder if they are all
made by this Centric company and just re-labeled?
When everything was said and done the pedal was extremely
spongy/soft. I rebleed the system again this morning and sure
enough there were a bunch of bubbles on the right front rotor.
On the initial install last night, I made a pressure adaptor ala
other posters and used an air compressor to pump the fluid
out. The flow was good, but this morning I decided to use the
standard pump the pedal method and the flow seems to be
much stronger with the motor in the master cylinder driving
the fluid out.
The truck brakes fine now. I really don't feel any difference
using the larger brakes or the stainless lines. Just a slight sense
of achievement know that I saved a few $$$. I'll try to post
some pictures later.
