That was a hard decision for me but I wanted the 2WD option with reduced wear and small increase in mpg. at 10K now I am happy with my decision. gets better every day.........when Mazda started producing their cars I had a lot of excitement and with my 97 4Runner I liked it but it was mostly utilitarian. Now with the 4th generation Toyota has gotten it right IMHO.......:dancin:

finding the 'sweet spot' and knowing how & when to use it can be a bunch of fun.
at a light... rolling a bit and then getting on the gas a little... that sucker just moves.
you're right about highway cruising... plenty of power on tap and it delivers it smoothly. only thing i noticed with the T4R V8 is that it runs out of breath around 90mph or so. my Pathfinder has scared me a few times in that once you hit 90... it SURGES (think accelerating off the line but a bit more subdued yet you get slightly kicked back in the seat) at 90mph and won't let up unless you take your foot off the gas... you're at 110+ in a matter of seconds. granted it's not a sports car, but in the four trucks i've owned i've never had a truck be able to do that.

My 3.4 feels like a turd after a ride in my friend's 4th gen 4Runner. But I make myself feel better by going for a ride in my friend's 22RE'ed 4Runner.
I think that the 3.4L V6 on the 3rd gens was a very good engine. When i had my 2002 4runner, i really did like the engine...till this day too. It was smooth, reliable, and torquey enough at low rpms to make it happy off-road. The only problem was that the engine is perfect for a stock 4runner. Once you start adding weight (bumpers, sliders) and bigger tires, this is when the engine's power becomes more of an issue. This is why i kept stock look except for slightly bigger tires (265/75/16). I really do miss my '02 4runner Ltd. (in pearly white).
