4th Try on Coils...

Or will this be my fifth set of rear coils...do I count the stock ones? :hee:

I started with OME 890 to 891 to Landcrusier coils (don't know the color codes like Duhocky)...and my rear is still sagging under fully loaded camp trips. :shoot self head: :that worries me:

So, I am going to try another set of coils, but I am not sure which way to go.

I want to stay flexy, but also be able to handle the load. It's a balance between length of coil and stiffness of coil. A long, not stiff coil seems like it may give too much lift when not loaded (length), then squat to much when under load (not stiff). However, a stiff coil, without enough length (OME 891's) were too squatty fully loaded (not stiff enough...or not tall enough???) but the 891's were okay at my daily load (I still have a lot of weight for day trips, with no camping). I need the right coil that will allow my rig to sit raked for day trips, and then level for overnights. Generally all the ones I have tried have only had a tiny bit of rake for day trip loads. (so...were not long enough or not stiff enough...I don't know??)

Here are the options I am looking at.

1) OME 892: These are designed for the 4runner in height, but may be too stiff. While I may not sag, I might also lose my flex and have an uncomfortable ride when unloaded. I don't know if these are really good for 4wheeling and articulation...but I don't know...
2) OME 851: These are the OME's for the landcrusier. So they would be like having the same springs I have now, but longer?
3) OME 850: These are the OME's for the landcrusier, but are stiffer for more weight. These might be way too much.
4) Stick with the LC stock coils I have, but put spacers on top of them to compensate for the sag. This is the only one where I can pretty accurately estimate the effects on the rig...same flexyness, but a little less ability to stuff the wheel in the well, and a bit of rake when not fully loaded. While I feel I know the outcome of this option the most, I don't really want to use spacers.

5) ??
6) ??

I've research airbags, and have eliminated those as an option. I think I might have one of the toughests lift configurations to figure out, due to the use of my rig. (family of 5, big dog, 4 night camping trips = HEAVY)

The two options I seem to be considering the most are OME 892's or 851's.

Okay...help please. I would love to only do this one more time.

Maybe you could try using a small trailer for all of your gear. The tongue load would be less than having all of that gear in your 4runner.

I think the 892's would be the way to go for peace of mind. You sacrifice the ride quality but you're eliminating the sag. It seems like you can only have one or the other (good ride and sag, or harsh ride and no sag) If the loaded trips are a regular thing, then 892's. If the trips are only a few times a year, stick with what you've got and deal with the sag. I guess we can't always have our cake and eat it too...lol

I think it may be those ome 850's, but I can't remember exactly. Ome makes a set of springs that are stock length (for the land cruiser) but will handle additional weight. that may be the way to go without adding any lift to what you already have.

This is why they make progressive springs....well atleast a benefit.

Yeah, that's a very cool setup. Why wouldn't a trailer cut it though? The reason it is sagging is because it is overloaded, JMO.

air bags?

How about a combo of the springs and air bags for the rear? Some guys seem to love those bags in back and then you can mess with the pressure to get the results you like.

I do believe Shawn St Cyr of the great state of TX went to the OME851s-also done at my garage-and his rear lift is now massive. Or maybe they were OME855s-it was a while back now.

thanks again for making me one of the swaps. I am quite happy with the 890s for my daily usage and loaded down they are fine as well. But I don't begin to attempt the camp setup you do sir.

With regards to the Landcruiser springs are there not 8 coil and 9 coil heights? So if you are only running the 8s now maybe the 9s would help?

Just tossing out possibilities. Sonoran Steel website of any help? As I recall Steve S. opinions on Old Man Emu in general-their springs are not for lift but for load. But of course many of us have disregarded said advice, with varying results....

If ever there was a guy needed to move up to the larger Landcruiser or Sequoia-you might just be that guy....
