4wd and drive shaft ?

I was under my 06 V6 4runner the other day hitting the greese fittings and I was wondering does the front U joint/drive shaft rotate all the time or only when im in 4X4?

Only 4wd. The axle shafts rotate but the ADD (auto-axle disconnect thingy) prevents the driveshaft from turning.
