So I just replaced my 3rd member with another auto 3.4 4wd 3rd member, I counted the teeth in a 6" section along Rgr ring gear, and the thickness of the ring gear both (the old and new) had the same count and measurements... But the question I have now is what is your guys rpms at 70mph? I'm pulling just over 2k. Now the reason I ask is as soon as I was done installing the 3rd, I just wanted to make sure it was correct. So I went to double check everything and was on my lawn and promptly snapped a front CV... I am slightly scared that I don't have the same gears now... I'm hoping this was just an odd coincidence

If you pulled the whole 3rd member, can't you go back and count the teeth on both the R&P for both of them to confirm the ratio? I would think that would be your safest bet. Sucks about the CV, I hope it is just an odd coincidence.
 
Same engine and Tranny on mine with 285/75/16 inch pro comp A/T and at 70 I'm a little over 2200 I have the factory gears in mine, its a 98 limited 4x4 with elocker

i would love to do this but the problem is so many of the teeth have been sheered off and about 1/3 of the pinion gear is clean shaven/broke off that i cant accurately count them... i dont think their is a good tooth on the ring either if that gives you an idea on how bad things came exploding appart... i was pulling hand fulls of teeth out of the housing when i pulled the old 3rd out. -and i dont want to pull the 3rd again if i dont have to...

when i was in 4wd on my lawn i didnt feel any binding, and i was only at an idle-crawl in 4lo... i just heard a "pop" when i turned to the left. as soon as i heard it i stopped and slowly went forward again then another "pop" but again no feeling of binding or resistance. so i backed up and tryed turning the other way, no sound and no binding. i got out and looked and part of the cage was poking out of the boot on the passenger side. now the last time i took this thing out was on the 4th of july and i wheeled it pretty hard and blew the front left CV. came home replaced it and drove it for about a week around town and then blew up the rear end like a block away from my house... i didnt have any tools with me to drop the drive line so i put it in 4wd to force it home (yes i know the the smartest idea but in my mind the damage was already done). anyhow i know that the last wheeling trip on the 4th was what killed it, and am hoping thats also what killed my other CV, but it unlike the first one(that broke on the trail that day and ended my wheeling trip for the day) had the same luck as my rear end and was a delayed death...
 
The actual percentage difference between 4.30 and 4.10 is not substantial enough to snap a cv unless it was literally on the verge of breaking. In which case, it was probably just an odd coincident. I wheeled a few times (easily) when I had 4.30s in the back and 4.10s up front with absolutely no issues. Since there isn't any way to count teeth, I would suggest doing what Gerdo posted. IIRC, when I had 285s I would be at 2-2.3k at about 70mph. That was with 4.30s (I think)

did i miss something here, some of these reply's arent making any sense?

to eliminate any confusion i will try to explain things. on my original 3rd member came the pinion gear was so bad that about 1/3 of the teeth in one section are gone, there is no way to tell where they would go or how many actually would be in that area (i had to drive it like this about a block and a half to get it back home in my driveway and then i moved it around in the driveway a few times to make room for my new 4runner). so i did what i could do best at that point, and i counted the teeth on the ring gear and compared it to the "new" 3rd member. they are the same. then i measured the thickness of the ring gear itself (a 410 would be thinner than a 430, maybe not visually but with a mic they would be different -visually a 410 will be thinner than a 456 or 488 and so on though...) and they both where with in like .002 of each other -same thing.

as far as i know 410s were never put in a auto trans truck, i dont even think it was available as an option. but that does not mean that someone has not gone and done a swap on their own time(like i just have done). so i guess this leaves me to the point where i need to take Gerdo's advice and just do the spin test... ahh more freaking thinking :ybrick::dammit:
 
The spin test is really your only option.
Even if you took measurements of the old and new R&P and they are both the same ratios, they might not measure exactly the same. Even from the same manufacturer, there can be some variation in dimensions.
