4wd clunking and drive shaft is binding when engaged

My 4wd is clunking badly in Hi and Lo, it increases in intensity when throttle is applied. I took it to my Mechanic and they put it on a lift and showed me the the front drive shaft is binding when manually turned to the extent that you cannot turn it at all at a certain point. They suggested I take it to a transmission place that deals with transfer cases and differentials.

Has anyone experienced this? It sounds like I am going to be out of a lot of money when I get around to taking it to a place

i'd stay away from those shops for that, it will be more expensive then it needs to be, try finding a drive line shop, they will know more about this issue then a trans shop and most likely be cheaper, as far as i know it sounds like a geometry issue as i can't see why it would bind all of the sudden,

the case engages right?
have you put any lifts kits or anything like that one it?
i'm just guessing here and i figure my guesses are better then the 0 responses you've had so far, lol

Yeah it engages. It just makes an ungodly clunking sound when engaged and moving.

My mechanic suggested a Driveline place, so I think I am going to see if they can check it out next week.

Edit- My mistake it is completely stock

yeah that's wired, so it sounds if it really is as if something has shifted position as opposed to and internal problems with either of the cases as it would either engage and become stuck and not dis-engauge or just not enguage at all if it was an internal problem.

i think this won't be as bad as you're thinking it may be as easy as tightening some bolts and replacing a few bushings.

to me personally it doesn't sound as if anything gernaded , but more like shifted.

heck a driveline shop may be able to just provide you with a custom shorter drive shaft for $150-200 bucks and call it good if it does end up being a 1K job or more.

I would drain your front diff and look for metal chunks. Maybe the driveshaft is binding up because the gears in the diff are grenaded. That would explain the clunking.

It sounds like he had it up on a lift and was turning the shaft by hand , I was assuming that they could actually see it binding , as opposed to it becoming just locked , but you could be right plus swapping out the fluid won't hurt and is easy to do , start there op and while your at it check out all of the bushings and mount bolts for the tcase trans and diff...
