4wd engaging weirdly

It is normal to have to back the 4R up to engage 4WD? When I push the 4WD button, it just flashes on the dash, I could drive for a mile like it. I recently tried pushing the button, backing up, then going forward again and the 4WD locked. What's up with that? Maybe I'm just a dolt and it's been required to do that the whole time? When she was new (2001) it didn't seem to have that problem, at least not that I can recall...

All the push button 4WD's seem to act funky like that. Some engage right away, some take a bit of moving around to get them to go in

Mine has slight difficulty going in too. However, with a little coaxing it does go in. I never had to move the truck to make it go in, I just play with the lever until it goes in.
