4WD grinding noise, HELP!

So after i crasehd, my battery kept dying from it sitting, and it was parked between cars so i could pull it out to jump it because i have this magnetic strip security thing that you have to swipe across another part for you to start it or put it in gear, so i was trying to figure out how to pull my car out, and my friend was like just put the 4WD in neutral and ill push it out...so i did that. so i pulled it into my driveway next to my brothers car, and it ended up dying again, so i had another friend come help me jump it, so i did the same thing, put it in neutral and rolled backwards until my hood met the other cars hood, after i jumped my car, and let it sit there running for a little while (note: the 4WD is still in neutral, and the car is in park at this point), i go to pull back up the driveway, and it goes no where since its in neutral on the 4WD shifter, but when i put the car in its neutral gear to get back into 2H, i do what i have always done, but this time i got the shifter between neutral and 4H, and then it would grind one something, and it wouldnt let me re-engage in 2H...

what did i do wrong, any help please?!

I am confused. what happened? which happened first?

haha okay, basiclly i had grinding trying to put my 4WD shifter from neutral to 2H, with my column shifter in neutral while it was running, and it wouldnt even let me get engage in 4H without grinding...

hey its normal i promise. mine does the same thing.

EDIT. it shouldnt do it in 4hi. so im guessing whatever it is that switches gears up front is stuck or just not working right

5 speed or auto? If it's auto, you always have to have your transmission lever in N when switching past N into L on the transfer case

Yeah I know, it was in neutral.

I think that is normal, just push it into 4HI slowly, you should feel the gears slowing down, but it should go in. It sounds nasty I know
