4WD, half tank in 50 miles

so... recently it had snowed about 3 inches here, melted then ice, since wednesday(Fill up)- friday night it has prettu much been in 4wd the whole time and i ahve only gone 50 miles but it has burned half a tank!!!!


when u guys are in bad weather when do u drive in 4wd and what is your MGP? i thing mine would be like 7mpg, pretty crappy! what yall think? i usaly get around 16

I'm running 4 snows in the winter and only use 4wd when I absolutely need it. Handles okay in 2wd I just have to slow down.

Yes you will get crap MPG in 4wd.
 
As you probably know the 4runner fuel guage is pretty crap. Mine will do anything between 70 - 120 miles at half way. If you stay in 4wd for an entire tank, let us know what the miles are then.
Were you doing any driving in low range? When I go wheeling for a full day and do a mix of high and low range stuff I get about 150 miles from a tank.

um... i also noticed when driving in 4WD the gas guage would go way down, like half a tank when i filled it up the night b4, then go back into 2WD and it would return back to full? thats messed up!

Lets please admit this.

By no means should any 4-Runner be getting that type of gas mileage in 4WD. I must say, I have used my 4WD on a full day of driving, and yes your gas mileage will depreciate, but not to that extent.

There must be something else going on:
 
ok... i ahve a question about my fuel.

do the fuel addatives really work?
like B44?

i hear that typical gas stations (QT, Conoco, BP) allready add things to keep you engine clean, but could there be more than just that regular gas will clean?

what about the injectors? could they be wrong?

so let me hear it and what yall think
 
Try running some Seafoam through a tank of gas and also pour some through the PCV valve to clear out any carbon buildup. that may be a cause of your bad mileage

Fawk, I can drive 120 mi to where I'm going to wheel, wheel all day in low range and low-low range, then drive 120 mi back home, all on 1 tank of gas.

And that's with 36" tires and a worn out carbed 4 cyl.

Wish I got that mileage... what size tank you got there?
That 150 I did was from 2 full days at paragon last winter and then about 50 miles on the highway towards home. Last Sunday I did 6hr (30 miles maybe) on trails at Rock Run and ended up with 230 miles from the tank.
 
i hear sea foam is kind hard to do and its alot of work,

i have a K&N CAI, may need to be cleaned

and i just recently changed the oil myself.

um... i usually get 15-16 mpg on an average tank (all city driving) i never get above 45 mph
but with 4wd its worse, since we just got a big ice storm last night i might want to use 4wd, AHHH great more money for gas! YAY (sarcasm)
 
dude, if you can clean your air filter and change your oil, you can seafoam your own truck...

but to be honest, get ready for a dirty MAF code or a clogged cat converter.... thats what was wrong with mine when i was getting about your mileage, hopefully its not either of those, but it could be...
 
Well I was going to ask

When doing the scheduled maintenance does the stealer replace the fuel filter?

I got tome 44K from work and ill put it in when I fill up

I think ill borrow the K&N cleaner from work and clean my filter since I work tomorrow and ask some guys at work about it, right now im kinda stumped

The truck is a 1996 SR5 with 201,527 4RUNNER
it has had all maintenance records, 1 owner, OVERSIZED tires, with he intake, but before it got cold I was getting 17-16 city driving, now im getting about 14-10, I know kinda sucks!

maybe ill just pull it into the garage and have some other guys come look at it,

what can do to test my MAF and CAT? Use the electronic de-coder?
 
For the last month or so I was getting about 14 mpg. I had just put on a basket on the roof, and was concerned that all of a sudden i went from getting solid 16 to 14 for 2 weeks straight. And then due to a dumbass decision, I blew my MAS and had to get a new one. I ALSO ended up replacing my o2 sensor 2weeks later. Just filled up after a nasty trip to aspen, about 75% 4wd, 25% 2wd and I clocked in at 16.8 mpg. So something had to give. Probably the o2 sensor seeing as I drove around for 2 weeks with a new MAS and still only managed about 15.2 mpg. Maybe look into replacing your o2 sensor and cleaning your MAS??

how do i test all that stuff? will seafoam clean the MAF? im going to work in 2.5 hours and would like a reply.

ill def clean my intake and run the coder and see if anything comes up,



there has been no rough idol or stalling (sputtering when cold when hit the gas... MAF?)
