4wd-High clunk

Hi everyone,

so I have switched my 4Runner into 4WD-High plenty of times for years now, and never had a problem with it. Yesterday I had to put it in, and as usual it went right over and had no issues. When I got back on concrete and was waiting for a nice straight-away to coast and turn it off, I noticed a clunk. When I would step on the gas the car seemed to clunk, almost like a lil boom. Any idea what this could be?! It does not do it in regular 2WD. I havn't tried 4WD-Low yet, but high does it so I am assuming low will also.

Were you moving or was the vehicle 100% stopped?

Nope it would make it in 2wd because there is no moment being applied to the joint as it should spin freely so to say.

i was going about 30mph on the street in 4wd-high, when i took my foot off the gas coasted for a sec, and then stepped back on the gas is when it made the sound.

but that would make the same sound in 2wd then as wheel no?

Not if its a U joint from the front drive shaft, then when in 2WD the transfer case won't have power going to it. If there is slop in the joint then when you hit the gas the one side of the drive shaft accelerated and then slammed into the otherside making it clunk. If its in 2WD no power is being applied to make it clunk.

I don't know if that's the case, seems possible. Maybe someone else can confirm or deny.

I am going to get under my car tomorrow to take a look and check the U joint, I'll keep you updated and let you know if that is the issue! thanks!:thumb:
