4WD light not lit in 4HI

I just did a clutch replacment, and now when i shift into 4HI (non-electronic shifting) the 4WD light doesn't come on. But when i'm in 4LO the light comes on (which shows the light is working)

I went under the vehicle and put it in 2HI, and the front driveshaft moved freely, then I shifted into 4HI and the driveshaft was locked, this usually means that 4WD is functional, but i'm wondering what could be wrong.

When i did the clutch replacment, i took 4wd shifter knob out, and i'm wondering if that's the issue. THANKS

Sometimes when i shift into 4hi the light doesnt come on right away, and sometimes i kinda have to knock it back a little more, like hit it a little and then the light will come on. Same thing happens when I shift from 4hi to 2. I move the shifter and it doesnt shift right away.

Sounds to me like that is a little like what is going on with yours. You say it actually shifts but the light just doesnt come on, basically the same thing happens to me. I shift and I can notice its in 4hi/2 (whichever i shift to) but the light doesn't always come on right away. I figure it's no big deal and if anyone questions my 4wd capabilities because of a light, I'll just park on their hood or something.

side note: I love when people try and mess with me because I'm a 4runner and they think they're faster (and usually are if they have any sort of a good car) but my favorite was a neon that tried to race, i beat him, he talked smack and said he'd find me, i said id find him and park on his hood. I would love to do that one day.

all i can say is, that's halarious. Haha, i'd like to race a riced out crap car and kick his butt just to silence them... Yeah, I'll take it offroad and make sure the 4wd is wokring (although driveshaft locking is pretty certian)...

but one issue that you don't have is the light NEVER turns on in 4HI... only 4LO, and it comes out of 4LO and immediately the 4wd light goes out. The only reason i want the light is beacuse it's a pretty accurate indicator of weather 4wd is engaged, and disengaged (because 4WD doesn't always use to come out when you shift)

Yea, i know what you mean, that's what i was saying about it taking a little while. I'll kick it in/out 4w and it can take a little while sometimes. HOWEVER, all you REALLY need to do to make sure 4wd is working is drive. The difference is so noticable. I don't know what that foward movement due to the engine idling is (ie move slowly when in drive and you and take your foot off the break) but that often doesnt even exist when i'm in 4hi. If that doesnt work, try turning. One thing i don't like about 4wd is how sticky it is on turns at short speeds. Parallel parking is also a pain (again because of the lack of that slow foward movement while not pushing the break).

I kinda don't like the light because its bright and annoying at night. Well it was at first until I put in a pioneer headunit and a radar detector. Nowadays there are so many lights in the car I don't know what to do with myself. either way, i know when i'm in 4wd because i can feel it kick in and that's all i need. you can have my 4hi light if you want, i dont know how that would work and im more being sarcastic but yea.

Ok, so i did more investiation... the front driveshaft locks, BUT, the front axels don't lock. So the driveshaft is spinning from the transfer case but the front tires aren't engaged. I found out it's a lead on the transmission, and i don't know why it's bad, i figured out which harness it is, (the 4lo is on one side and 4hi is on one side)

So i'm going to do some more troubleshooting... does anyone know where to find accurate wiring diagrams for the 4WD SR5 3.6L... the ones in my hayes repair manual are for the Tacoma and T100, but not 4runner (and the colors don't match)
