4wd problem...

I've got a 96 limited. With push button 4wd. The tc actuator works, I pulled it off and bench tested it by applying 12v. I also tested the 4wd button on the shifter, and that switch works.

At the actuator, it doesn't get power when I push the button. So the problem is somewhere in between. Some one please help. I couldn't find wiring diagrams or anything special to my problem. It's not the vsv in the engine bay like many have a problem with. And it's not the actuator cause I tested it. Anything is useful.

So what does the dash show when you attempt to go into 4wd? Try what the manual says to do when it won't go into 4wd? Try the infamous right hand turn while trying to go into 4wd? :cowboy:

No dash light. Fuse is good. Switched it with the wiper Fuse. Still no good. Didn't try the right hand turn because it's late now. Which manual are you referring to?

If no light, flashing or otherwise, and from the other things you have said, 4wd ECU is not even trying to engage the actuator at the TC. So I wouldn't bother with the right hand turn or other engagement tricks. The two most likely fails are that the 4WD ECU is not getting power from the fuse or is not receiving a signal from the pushbutton. I'd get to the 4WD ECU(driver side kick panel) and see if I have 12V+ at the black/yellow on Pin 16 and If I have ground at the Pink wire on Pin 15 when 2-4 switch is set to 4 (hint says test for 12V+ on Pin 15 but from the wire diagram (1996 EWD attached) that has to be a misprint). Also check for voltage and ground at pin 3 (green) and Pin 2 (yellow/black) as you go from 2 to 4 on the switch.

Do this and we should have a pretty good idea where your issue is. I always ask for [MENTION=102597]IBallEngineer[/MENTION] to join me at looking at the fun ones.

I will try all this tomorrow morning. I saw your reply while I was trying to search, you really seem to know a lot about the 4wd system. I will report back tomorrow. Where did you get that diagram from?

Watch a youtube video on using multimeters. It's not difficult. Just so you can know about continuity and voltage and ground. [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION] will do the brain work, he's not really a person, he's actually a rebuilt 4Runner ECM connected to the internet and Solar Panels. And he's been programmed to believe he lived in South America. Really cool too.

So I goofed up... While I was putting the actuator back on yesterday, my buddy was putting the interior back together. He didn't put the 4wd fuse back in. I found that out while testing for the voltage that Durk was talking about. So popped it in and tested and everything works again.

Leaves me to assume that the actuator was seized up, and the teardown and relube and bench testing we did yesterday fixed it right up.

Sorry for the waste of time and thread. Appreciate all the help though. Love this site.

Yup, that's what it sounded like from the beginning. Glad you got it figured out.
