4wd question

Just purchased a 2005 4runner with 52k miles - when I put the car in four wheel drive the indicator light says it is working, however my previous dodge 4wd the steering would bind up a little when I was in 4wd and I was on dry pavement (it was supposed to do this)

On the Toyota 4runner is the 4wd not that noticeable on dry pavement?

When I put the car in 4wd low I can feel the change down to a lower gear.

we need more info, what year 4runner?

some of them will feel like your old dodge some of them won't, depends on what type of 4wd system is being used in your model, you;re better off putting this question into a year specific forum...

long story short for the most part when in 4hi it won't feel like the dodge but if you drop it into 4lo it will, if you have the multi-mode like i do then teh push button is like an AWD option(think subaru) and the shift/lever controlled 4wd is more like what you had in the dodge, i hope this makes some sense to you, it's not a very good explanation but the best i can do with out knowing what exactly your looking at

He's got a 4th gen (2005), That's normal for those vehicles. The 4WD system was designed so that you could if you wanted to run the vehicle in 4Hi with no issues. The V8 models are actually All-Time 4WD with no 2Hi option.

Push the center diff button, then it will bind up like your Dodge. Do not drive on the pavement with the center diff locked.

Thanks guys - I followed up your post with some other reading and figured it out. Gotta say this - The Toyota is far superior to my Dodge Dakota in every way.
