4wd transfer lever - how hot?

Just got a 95 wiuth 200K on it, 22r engine with new heads, in real good shape.

I just got done running it about 800 miles. The 4wd 2wd lever for the transfer case - got hot - hot enough so it was uncomfortable to hold , didn't burn, but if you held the metal part - it would be close to burning you - you could hold on - but it was hot. (I do have aftermarket hand locking hubs - and I did check and they were released)
In the meantime - the transmission lever (manual trans) never got beyond slightly warm.

whats up? why the heat? do I need to check and or change fluid ?

If so - what are you guys running in the transfer case?

Thanks for the help

You should certainly check the fluid, and if it looks like it needs to be changed, do so.
The t-case uses about 2 qts of 75W90 or 80W90, GL4 or GL5
