4WD won't disengage, I think

Can someone help me with a problem (I'm new to this site)? I have a 2003 4Runner Limited 4x4. I recently started having some transmission problems.

About 3 weeks ago, I put the car in 4Hi on a dirt road. I put it back in 2wd later that day. The next time I backed up, I would feel a "bump" from the rear of the car, about once every wheel revolution, making me think the 4wd never disengaged. I don't get this bumping when I put it back into 4wd, only when backing up in 2wd. It is intermittant.

Is this an actuator problem? What does it take to get it it fixed? Am I running risk of damaging the car driving it like it is? If I do drive it, should I keep it in 4wd?

Maybe... Did the dash lights indicate that the vehicle transitioned back into 2wd? (No lights on...)


If so grease the driveshaft. There's a sticky on driveshaft thump and another one on zerk fittings.
