4x4 General Use Questions

Is it bad to switch in and out of 4 wheel drive while driving on the freeway? I know the computer wont let you do it if your going over 50 or 60 mph.

Is it bad to use the differential locker to spin doughnuts or drift? What about tricking the traction control into drifting? Or are you only supposed to engage the locker at low speeds?

Let me know what you do and or think. Thanks.

I can't REALLY help on your questions. I can give you some "i think" answers.
First off, I wouldn't switch it while moving on the freeway. I always put mine in when im stopped.

For the diff locker, I use mine when i'm doing that stuff. I don't think it's bad.

I also engage my locker when I'm stopped in neutral. Otherwise I think it would hurt your locker if you were moving.

But yes, do some research and you should find some definitive answers.

Thanks man. I know I kinda feel the same way, but on the other hand isnt that the point of electronic 4 wheel drive control? Good to hear about the locker, I tought it was retarted that you cant turn the vsc off, but I guess now I can.

I am frequently traveling across the state and need to switch on and off my 4 wheel drive when going through the pass and other streches of snow covered roads.

I usually turn it on and off 2-4 times over a 300 mile trip. Mostly when I am going over the pass. It would be a pain to pull off every time to switch it, but I dont want to damage anything. I want to know how bad it is to decide what I should do. Thanks for the help.

No, it is NOT bad to go from 2wd to 4wd to 2wd while driving...just keep under the speed limit noted in your Owner's Manual (i think that it is 62 mph).

IMHO, if you're anticipating that you will need 4wd in certain areas, then i would leave it in 4wd for most of the trip, unless you know for sure that the weather will be dry. The fuel economy between 2wd/4wd switching and leaving it in 4wd is probably not that much different...and will give you more peace of mind. How can you put a price on peace of mind?

4runners are not good for doughnuts...eliminate that activity from your "to-do" list. I would not recommend you do it with the center diff locked. Yes, the center diff lock will turn OFF VSC (stability control). However, if the ground is dryer than you expect, then this can create binding. Why risk it?

If you are dying to do doughnuts, then i would do the DIY mod to turn off VSC/ATRAC. This mod has been done by a few people on this forum...you may want to check that out.

I believe that you can engage your center diff locker while moving...actually, you can lock it quicker on the move than when you are at a standstill. Just turn the steering wheel to one side (not extreme, but turn it a few degrees) and press the locker button and drive. Keep the steering wheel turned in one direction only. The locker should lock pretty quickly. Unlocking it by the same method.

The only thing that you have to stop for is when you engage 4-LO.

Why no doughnuts? I am doing them in unplowed parking lots of snow with a sheet of ice under that. But not good in mud or gravel? I used to have a tacoma that I probably put a few hundred miles of doughnuts on! Never had any problem with that. What part is it that will be damaged?

Switching in and out of 4WD while underway is what the unit is designed for so switch away as long as you are under 55 mph.

As for donuts? Well I would think you could do them with the locker on but it can't be good for the system components and those are very expensive to repair/replace.

Note to self: Do not buy used T4R from dheeter....:biggrin2:
