4x4 keeps going in and out won't stay on

I'm trying to figure out the problem with my friends 4x4 it won't stay engaged it will go in to 4wd then after like 20 min it will kick it out of 4wd back to 2wd anyone have some ideas I tried looking through the threads but can't seem to find a similar problem any help will be appreciated

You mean the 4x4 shift lever jumps back into 2wd on its own?
What is the year of your friends vehicle?

Is this on dirt roads?

Oil in transfercase?

Yep. I can't even begin to respond without knowing if it is vacuum or electric ADD or J-shift or pushbutton.

Does the light go out or start flashing? How do you know it left 4wd? Really need to describe this a LOT better.

It really doesn't matter if you tack on to an existing, but inactive thread (proves you searched, at least) or start a new one. What you should not do is hijack an active thread focusing on someone else's problem unless it is identical.

However, there is no substitute for a clear, detailed description of the problem and good identification of the equipment involved.
