4x4 not working??? i think

well today i went off roading and i was cruzing at about 40 when i pushed the 4x4 button on the 4x4 lever thingy, the first time the light came on and the 4x4 engaged, however once i took it off it would not come back on. it makes the sound in the xfer case when it locks, but the light doesn't come on and the rear tires are the only ones driving.

any help?????????????

btw 97 4runner limited 4x4 if that helps...

ahh...its not on the fly. so if it engaged it wasnt supposed to and now its all screwed up.

it says in the owners manual it is on the fly and can be engaged going at most 62 mph.


so thats not the problem



what do you guys think is??

would low tranny fluid have anything to do with it?

You should be able to shift it on the fly. Did you try and shift it into low? Try pulling the fuse out and checking it. My buddy's 01 did the same thing after he had CC install an Ipod adapter. It turned out a fuse had blown when they were tryin to splice some wires (this is what I was told). Anyhow, a new fuse went in and he was ready to go. FWIW, I would not recommend going 40 off road. It might be fun but it is not good on the vehicle and will ultimately shorten the life of your truck. Use the rule of thumb: "as slow as possible, as fast as necessary"
