4x4 question...Help me out here

I have 2 86 4runner 4x4's. One has the independent front axles, and the other has a solid axle conversion. Problem is, I like the one with the independent axle better, it looks, and drives better, but not in the mud. Why is the front right wheel spinning in the mud but not the front left? I don't know anything about the independent axles, never had them on a 4x4 until I got this 4runner. Do they make a locker for the front?

Oh, and how much am I looking to spend on it? I don't need a high end locker, just something to get me through the mud in my pasture when I go fishing in my pond.

They do have a locker for the 7.5" IFS diff. Randys Ring & Pinion has a good selection for you to start with.
Keep in mind you're more likely to break a CV joint with a locker, and it's harder to steer with a locker.

If that's all you need it for, it may not be worth it. Figure $200-300 for an inexpensive one, and probably 2 hrs labor (@ $80-100/hr) if you pull the diff and carry it in. Add another 4 hrs or so if you have the shop remove/reinstall the diff.

Well I have quite a bit of mud to get through to get to my pond, and I've stocked it for years and I REALLY REALLY want to catch those fish over and over. If the locker is bad for cv joints then how else can I get my front left wheel to spin in the mud? I can do all the work, I'm very mechanically inclined, but Ive never messed with 4x4 independent front axles.

Weld the front differential. Yes...it will be harder to turn, but IMHO not that bad. You should not drive it locked on a surface (like dry pavement) where the tires can't slip a bit.

You'll go places you couldn't before...and most rigs still can't.

If you think you can install a locker, replacing a blown CV joint shouldn't be a big problem. Besides, you'll gain experience with IFS axles when you pull them out so you can pull the diff out to install the locker.
