4x4 wont engage when hot

I just bought a 97 4runner limited. the 4x4 works great when the car is cold. but after driving it for 10 minutes or so it works intermittent or not at all.

Does not seem to be any tricks to it when it is cold. just click the button on the 4x4 stick. I also hear a clicking and sometimes even feel a little thump like it tries to engage but it is not in 4x4. I test it by hitting the gas and only the rear tire spins. the green light comes on when it is working and it does not when it is not working.

First thing to do is figure out if the problem is the front ADD system or the TC. Put it in 4WD, jack up the front and try to turn the front propeller shaft by hand. If it is locked, TC is engaged and problem is in ADD. If it turns and so do the front wheels, problem is in TC. If it freewheels, neither is engaging. Do that, and we can start troubleshooting. (The green light only comes on when both report engagement.)

Did you try both 4H and 4L? It is important to do so.
