Phew, I feel like I just won the lottery. On the way to the self wash bays this morning I wanted to see how f'ed I was (Im usually really unlucky in situations like this). So I popped it in 4H, it did its usual 20 second dance and then engaged. Then to 4lo. I pull over, put it in neutral and throw it into 4lo... nothing but a blinking light for 60 seconds. My heart stops and I take a deep breath. Second try, not even a full blink and it engages like it was just rolled out of the factory yesterday. It even disengaged without a problem. I repeated this a few times and crawled around for a minute or two. Woop woop I better go buy myself a lottery ticket.


TL;DR Gregs 4x4 actually works how its supposed to. Hope you all enjoyed my narration... I have too much time on my hands.

That is great news! Seems like the V8 4Runners have more 4low issues than the V6. I have the V8 and 4lo is not working on mine currently.

Is it normal for it to occasionally shift into low in a pretty rough way. Kind of like a whinny sound and then a rough crunch? Not sure if those are the correct words to use but hoping you get the point I am trying to make. 95% of the time it goes into low but sometimes I have to put it back into 4 high and do the whole process over again for it to take. 1 out of 5 times it makes these odd noises though....

Sometimes I get a good thump when it engages Lo, sometimes not. Figure it is just a matter of how the gear teeth lined up at the moment.

Never a whining sound though, but my hearing is shot, so who knows?

The motors driving the shift shafts make the whirring sound, it's not real loud.
