5,000 mile 1st service experiences

Hey guys i was wondering for those who have had the 5,000 mile 1st
service performed on their 2010 + 4Runner....how did it go and what
did they do? I just had mine performed today and i'm a little irked.
Basically they kept my 4runner there all day and when i returned i
asked what they did and the service manager told me Tire Rotation.
I was a little confused, 1st service guy told me it was gonna undergo
an oil change, service manager said no oil change at 5,000. Needless
to say my local dealer gave me lousy service i think from now on i'm
working on it myself like i have with every vehicle i've owned. Complimentary
service is a joke since they arent pushing expensive parts on you
they basically give you low priority and crappy service, well at least
in my experience.

FROM THE OWNERS MANUAL.

Check installation of driver’s floor mat
Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Rotate tires
Visually inspect brake linings/drums and
brake pads/discs
Additional Maintenance Items for
Special Operating Conditions 2
Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads:
Inspect ball joints and dust covers
Inspect drive shaft boots (4WD)
Inspect engine air filter
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Lubricate propeller shaft 3
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt 3
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body
Driving while towing, using a car-top
carrier, or heavy vehicle loading:
Lubricate propeller shaft 3
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt 3
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body

I had my 1st 5000 mile service done friday. It was just a "check of things" and tire rotation. I paid for the oil change just because i wanted it done because your supposed to do it every 10,000 miles because of the synthetic oil. They also took care of the seatbelt chime, unlocking ALL the doors when you grab the driverside door instead of just that door unlocking and all my windows roll down with the remote. They did that for free in 1.5 hrs while I waited for it. Sunrise Toyota in Oakdale NY, great people and customer service.....always.

The 4R's were scheduled to have oil changes every 5k, but with the new oil they changed it to every 10k. They sent all us early buyers all new maintenance books/logs reflecting the changes. So, sure the 1st guy you talked to might have still had the old info in his head but when they put it into the system they saw it was not 'due' for an oil change for another 5k.

Another question, did you get the free '2-year maintenance' service plan with your 4R (or whatever it is called)? If so then they did exactly what there were required to do, rotate the tires at 5k and do a visual inspection. The only thing I would find 'crappy' is that they kept it all day for that, but that all depends if you actually sat in the waiting room vs. being home with a 2nd car.
 
My local dealership which is very close to my house very convenient, well this one in particular seemed to have poorly trained staff contradicting eachother.
I opened up my manual and i must have the 1st print because it states 5k miles. My SR5 did have the 2 year complimentary maintenance
and on the tear away voucher half way down the list its in bold letters Synthetic oil change 5k miles I should have know better
than to take it in to my local dealership. I should pre face this by saying during the buying process months back they wouldn't work with
me as far as ordering a black SR5 i wanted despite having an 820 credit score so i took my business elsewhere, like over 80 miles away.
They treated me wonderful, i almost contemplated going there for service. I guess my only gripe here is i wish my particular service dept would
get better training and know their product. After all they work on toyotas all day so they should know them inside out. So far i'm loving
my Rig and i have some mods on the horizon. Ohh before i forget i went home while it was being worked on but it was promised back in 2hrs it was even written on my receipt, they couldn't even do that with hardly any customers around, ridiculous.

I didnt know they offered this or that the 4runner was capable? What would they charge for that?

They should not be charging you anything. It is listed under "customizable features" and should be changed for free. I would recommend having them do it when it is in for something else as well, i.e. oil change.

Just took my turn at wasting 2hrs of my life while they moved the tires around during the routine 5k mi free maintenance service.

Tried to ask them to do the oil, since some people on here are having success, but they wouldn't do it. I also asked them to set up the key to roll all the windows down, but when I got it back... it wasn't set up at all and I didn't want to walk back in since I was over it at this point.

Bummer that Toyota's service guys are treating the 20k mi free maintenance plan as a hassle rather than an opportunity to impress us as possible future customers.

I've been meaning to post my latest experiences but I don't feel like "going there" for awhile.
Long story short, I've allegedly got a store credit at the dealer for the 70 bucks I shelled out for my 5k o/c. The service mgr talked to me but i never got a follow up from the Toyota main office on how it was resolved.
I hope I can spend the credit in the parts dept and never see the dealer again.

i might steal that quote for when I do talk to toyota corporate again.

Took my 4R for it's 5000 mi. check and got the tire rotation and when I asked about changing the oil I was told that there are "additives" in the original oil so that's why it does not get changed until 10,000 miles???
 
Paid for my oil change at 5000 mi (just couldn't stomach doing it @ 10,000 mi for first change). At 10,000 mi, went in, they just rotated tires. They told me to keep my coupon for service So I now have all 5 coupons (they wouldn't use it for the first change). We will see what happens if I can use these for 5 oil service now (which would be really nice).
 
My top left window sticker that was on the new 4runner says next service/oil change at 5000 miles. THEY WILL change my oil. I have 3k to go before I have to go to that sh*thouse and get it done.
 
I just always thought a vehicles very first oil change was important. Something was bugging me after that visit and about a week later i changed my own oil. Just out of curiosity i placed a very strong magnet in the oil and it picked up some very tiny shavings so i can only imagine what the filter trapped. Maybe its just me but a vehicle should have its first oil change between 1k-2k miles then follow manufactures guidelines. i wouldn't want those shavings in there till the 10k miles when the dealership said it was due...well just my 2 cents as they say :)
 
I have the 2 years free maintenance and the service writer initially tried to get me to pay for the 5k and the 15k oil changes since the interval had been changed shortly after I purchased it. I told him that the deal made at the time of purchase was for oil changes every 5k as written on the coupons and as stated in the original manual. Trying to change the deal after the fact is illegal and that if they refused to honor the original agreement, I would be calling the local news about Toyota's new "bait and switch" sales tactics.

Needless to say, I got my oil changes done for free.

Sadly, they are now all on me; I hit 20k a couple weeks ago. :driving:

I don't buy the whole changing it at 1k-2k due to metal in the oil. From the engines we tore down at work, the metal bits are all in the oil already after running through the assembly testers*. If you are that afraid of metal in the oil, I'd be changing the oil as soon as you drove home from the dealership. The filter is there for a reason. If the bits are small enough to get through the filter, they are going to be small enough that they won't score the bearings. I'd be far more concerned about the oil losing its lubricity and that leading to bearing failure.

I've torn down Toyota engines run on dyno cells for over 150hrs at redline and rarely saw anything remotely concerning (particularly oil related items like crank, conrod, or cam bearing wear). If you do a lot of towing or mountain driving, change the oil at 5k, as the manual says. If you keep her on pavement living the easy life, let it go 10k.

* Just the honest opinion of a quality engineer for an engine manufacturing plant

Sounds interesting and good to hear. I do live in an extreme climate, summertime reaches 115+ in the desert, lots of stop and go in that weather and i'm sure stuff wears out quicker.
 
I've never had any issues with my service department. I call em and say hey i want this done and they go "ok". I bought the 3 year 45000 mile maintenance plan, and I dont regret it a bit. All my scheduled maintenance is free when I want to do it, and I dont go the full 10k. I get my oil changed at about 7500, and my service guys like me, so they honor what i would like. So it works out great for us.

plus if its gonna be awhile I always get a loaner off the used lot that I get to pick out to drive around.
