5 best All Terrain Tires??? INPUT PLEASE?

Hey Guys…I need some major help on getting new shoes for my 2008 Sport Edition T4R. I have done a lot of research and searched and read most of the posting on the best all terrain tires. I currently have some Michelin LTX AT2 265/65/17s and they have lasted me about 80K miles, without hurting my gas mileage (19.5 MPG), have always balanced and aligned without a problem, no noise issues and no vibration. The only thing is that they are EXPENSIVE!!!! I negotiated these when I purchased my T4R. Truthfully I think that these were great tires but not too aggressive looking. Now I am looking for a more aggressive looking tire without hurting any of the above…specially the MPG, Mileage and Vibration…I can live with noise…if that is not possible then I might have to bite the bullet with the Michelins.

I also want to increase in size to 265/70/17s and keep the white letters…will that work without rubbing??? Here is what I have narrowed it down…please give input!!!

BTW I live in GA so no snow…due minor offroading (mostly dirt trails, I due motocross so I get my “offroad” high of that!)…mostly pavement and it is my daily driver. I don’t tow so I think I only need C class right?

1. Goodyear Duratracs: Have really good reviews and look bad to the bone, but since they are so new I don’t know what kind of mileage I expect from them? Do they balance ok? Vibration? I want it with the white letters out but does it look bad to have “WRANGLER” on the tire of a T4R? What max size without spacers? Will it hit MPG’s?

2. General Grabbers: Great reviews, aggressive looking, but don’t know how much mileage I expect either. Has white letters. What max size without spacers? Vibration? Will it hit MPG’s?

3. Nitto Terra Grapplers: Great reviews, aggressive….but no white letters? Vibration? Mileage? Will it hit MPG’s?

4. Michelin LTX AT2…love’em, but not too aggressive looking and expensive.

5. BFG AT KO: Love the look, but heard they are the heaviest tire so will hurt MPG most likely, have trouble on wet pavement, but last a long time

6. Not interested in REVO, REVO 2, Kelly Safaris, etc…. Destinations (maybe),


P.S. Recommended place/website to buy tires?

asking kind of alot & little hard to answer without writing a letter. i suggest searching each question individually for complete answers. quicky tho: most 265/70 will fit stock (no lift) without rubbing except for something thats very squared off, (like bfg) but its easy to trim for . going from an all season or highway tire to an AT will result in a very slight mpg decrease depending on load range, weight, etc. vibration depends on who does the balancing, (get a roadforce balance if possible), if u think the ltx's arent aggressive looking enough, u most likely will have the same opinion about the destinations. so its gonna be hard to get an agressive looking tire to give u the mpg, etc. the ltx's do, & is still be cheap. the closest to the mich. would be the firestone des. at. & they would be less $, but no where near as aggressive looking as the others u mentioned.

Chaz....thanks for the input...but the Michelins are All-Terrain...not a highway tire...they are just not that aggressive...I just don'w want to take a large hit on MPG... I understand that there may be some.

I know I am asking for a lot, but hopefully a few people will chime in with different advice and experiences...but we all know how hard it is to buy new shoes for our babies!!!

I really like the Duratracs but too many unknowns in regards to mileage and vibration...they look really rugged to be a smooth ride.

I can try to help out with this since I did alot of research regarding tires.

1. GY Duratracs and Kelly Safari TSR are almost the same exact tire and the Kelly Safari is just a tad cheaper than the GY Duratrac. Kelly is made by Goodyear. The Duratracs are a great tire and go to google and put in GY Duratrac and check out sites with reviews. The guys I know that have them have not had many problems with balancing and expect to lose about 1-2 MPG with these tires due to upsizing from the stock size. They weigh more than the stock ones.

2. The General Grabbers are a great A/T tire and you can expect around 45,000-50,000 out of them. The max size would probably be 265-70. Yes these will also hit your MPG's. Most tires you go with 265-70 will probably hit your mpg's.

3. The Nitto TG's are a great tire and this is the one I decided on. I went with a 265-70 and they ride great on pavement and awesome off road. They are quiet and I lost around 1-2 MPG's but it wasn't a huge notice in drop.

4. I have heard the Michelins are very good.If you want something aggressive then this tire isn't for you. They are very good quality!

5. The BFG's are very good and the reason why they are so popular is because they are a great tire. Alot of guys run these and they are quite aggressive. I have seen alot of guys getting 65,000+ miles out of them.

I would also suggest getting your tires from Discount Tire if you have them in Atlanta. I purchased mine from www.discountire.com and had them installed at my local shop. If you have a store near you go in and talk to somebody and they are very helpful and if you find a lower price they will automatically match it. Some other places you can check are Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels and Discount Tires, Wheels & ATV | Treadepot.com. Tread Depot is located near Atlanta so check them out. A couple of other tires you didn't mention were the Cooper Discoverer ST, Hankook Dynapro AT and the Cooper ST Maxx.
 
I think the Yokohama Geolander A/TS are a pretty good tire for the price point. They are currently on the 05 Tundra and I like them, but I liked the Michelins better. Right now I have the Michelin LTX AT2s on the 94 Runner so far so good. I've had them less than a month though, very nice in the tsunami style rains in Montana lately. I thought they weren't priced that bad at $520 for the set, but those were 15".
 
I was torn between the nitto terra grapplers and the general grabbers until I read some reviews from several guys saying they had to rotate the generals more often to prevent cupping.
I love the nitto's thus far. I noticed no change in mileage or vibration. They run super smooth and you have to listen carefully to hear a very slight hum at hwy speeds.
So far I have about 7000 miles on them with one rotation.
 
I have been running the Nitto Terra Grapplers for 50k and due to an alignment issue never rotated them but they still have some life left. They started to get louder as the tread wore but nothing bad until about 35-40k. They have worked very well in almost all conditions on and off road. I am due for another set of tires and because of budget I am looking at the new Falken Wild Peak AT. These are a nice aggressive AT with great reviews from all the magazines. Some discount tires have a private label version Rocky Mountain AT?
 
Two more tires to consider: Hankook Dynapro ATm and the Toyo Open Country AT. I've been pretty impressed with the set of Hankooks I have. They are quiet, balance good and are cheap. The toyo's are also quiet, balance extremely well, but may not be as cheap. A very good tire IMHO.

The GY duratracs look very impressive to me and have great reviews. I haven't had good luck with goodyear tires in the past but I haven't found anything bad with the duratracs. These may be my next set.

I've had many sets of BFG ATs over the years in various sizes. Three things remained the same with all of the sets: 1. They work great everywhere. I've had them in just about every kind of terrain I could think of and they have always worked good. 2. They seem to last forever. The last set of BFGs I replaced with another set of BFGs had 85k miles on them and still had ample tread. I replaced them because winter was coming and I had some OT money saved. 3. Every set of BFGs I've every had has had balancing issues. Some were so bad the whole tire had to be replaced.

x2 for the Falken Wild Peak AT's. I am leaning towards them as my next set of shoes for my 01 Runner. Look sick, great reviews and will be easier to digest. Instead of going with more expensive rubber, I am thinking Wild Peaks and maybe a set of Cragar Soft 8's with the money i will save. My 2. Good luck mate.
 
Installed the Hankook Dynapro ATm's on my GF's SUV and at 3000 miles they are are doing great. They were relatively cheap too.

I love the Yokohama's AdvaS on my car so much I bought the company, :lmao: no no no I then installed the Geolander AT/S on my 2003
V8 4runner. I love the tires. They are moderately aggressive looking, and they handle very well on pavement which is where you'll mostly be since you motocross for your offroad fix. I find that the compound really grab the pavement. Not sure how long they will last, I don't drive that much. And I swap in winter geolander in winter and MTZ for offroading.

Justs choose something that you will like to look at everyday. Every other spec is often too close to even compare. And sometimes one persons experience is so wildly different than someone else's.

This weekend, an offroading buddy had 3 flat tires on GY duratracs on a FJ. Everyone passed through the same place, no one else had duratracs, no one else had flats. Up until now, he loved tires, other people who had them loved them. Now, who knows. Bad luck, bad tires, not quite the same lines, we'll never really know. But 3 flats....redicoulous.

An other buddy had pirelli P zero nero or something like that on a Mustang GT. Never had any problems, loved the tires, everything was great, until he had a blow out 2 weeks ago. I've had a blow out on a GY Eagle. All the above are expensive tires, supposedly good quality tires.

My dad uses el cheapo store brand tires, any canadians here will know motomaster tires from canadian tire. He's never had an issue, never had a blow out, I don't even think he's had a flat tire. So go figure.
 
Take a look at Firestone Destination A/Ts. They've done really well for me. They hold the road well. They did really well in the snow. They are OK in the mud. It you're going for looks, they have a little bit of an aggressive edge to them. Give em a look. :lookout:
 
best A/T tires

I know this thread is old but is likely to still be viewed a lot.
I have to say that I did A LOT of research myself before my big and oh so important purchase and I could not be happier with my choice.
I will first say that I spent hours and ended up with a list of about 9, then narrowed it down to about 4. I then waited and over a couple weeks I tried to find people in person who had the tires on my list, looking everywhere I went. I was lucky enough to find a couple of them and talk to the owners and listened as they drove off, which helped me cross them off my list.Then I was down to 2 and when I remembered that the Coopers were made in the US, I pulled the trigger.
I got a set Cooper Discoverer AT3. They are much quieter than most, handle surprisingly well, have deeper tread than almost all their competition, made in the US, look cool but not overly aggressive and do great off-road. Oh and to top it all off they do alright in the mud. In the reviews I read by pro testers they said these were the only AT tires they tested that did an ok job in the mud. I can attest to the truth of this, except for the time I went through sloppy mud and then right into deep sand. The only time I was ever stuck.
They do still sell these and I can not recommend them more. I will say that I would rather have a set of 33s on 17s but since I still have my old 15x10 mags and had to get the 31.5" models, my tire shop had to order them. But it was worth the wait as they were even cheaper there than I could find them online and I got a lifetime, full replacement warranty for all 4 tires for something like $82! Beat that.
So, if you need a new set of A/Ts, get the Cooper Discoverer AT3 tires and waste no more time researching. And if if you have an America's Tire by you, get them there. You will be so happy you did.

Just replaced my BFG Rugged terrain.. did NOT like.. as wore got really loud and harsh ride. Was think of some suspension changes..

Then got new tires and wow.. such a different ride..

Another +1 for the BFGoodrich AT2s.

There seems to be two different flavours with different speed ratings.. most A/Ts in 285/75/16 seemed to have a max rating of 99 mph..

The BFGs I got were 116MPH... Might not be much of a factor for some, but its good to know, especially for anyone running a bit more that stock power.
 
Im looking for a set of off road capable tires, probably 31", that wont bog down my 3rz too much. Also want to be able to have freeway passing power. Thinking of going with some bfg all terrains in 265/70/16
