I am new to these vehicles. I come from older trucks and cars before all the eco shifting. Newest vehicle we own is a 06 sienna,so maybe some of you can help me. My 10 Limited's tranny drives me nuts that it continues to upshift. I go and hit the gas harder, it just sits and nothing really happens. it just doesn't move like some of the older cars where it kicks down. I have to hit it hard to down shift,then it shifts one gear and does not continue to shift to another gear. Is it normal? No need for a dragster, but like to get out of dodge when necessary without flooring it. the damn thing is in 5th gear doing 35. i know, I know, I can use tip. I am just trying to learn my new truck.

x2 on this issue. I think we are just going to have to live with it. Coming from 2 v8 4runners, it sure make my new 2013 feel like dog. Sorry I have nothing to say except "me too"

Thats kind of where I'm at too. There is so much else to love about the car that I'm not too worked up about it. I will say that I have gotten better at finding that tip point between throttle input and shifts to keep it pretty lively.

You bought this used right? If you did you need to disconnect the battery for several minutes and allow the ECU to reset. It has "learned" the driving habits of the previous owner and is responding accordingly. Do this and then drive it like you normally do. It will take a little time but eventually it will "learn" your style and adjust some parameters. Will it make it quicker? No but it should do a few things more to your liking.

I recommend driving in Shift 4 and using shift 5 when you need the gear. Only time I use D is on the freeway.....sometimes. I use only S 4 on surface streets and its much better. I drove a whole tank in S 4 and 5 and noticed a loss of 1 mpg average, but I don't care about mpg. I drove to Tahoe last week using S4 and 5, no D and I got 18mpg up and 24 mpg back (downhill).

If you drive aggressively it will help it learn your style a little.
Get used to using the sport mode to bypass it...
Where is this sport shift mode you speak of? Tiptronic? There use to a ECT button on all the older Toyotas like my old Land Cruiser. I will have to try the ECU deal. i burn through a tank of gas driving gently and it got only 15mpg mixed driving. That's only two miles better then my 80 series LC. :wow2:

When in Drive push shifter to the left and it should put you in S 4. Tap up to 5 or down to 3, 2 1 etc.

^^ Correct. A lot of new cars are designed to do just that. After you do what 1engineer said, drive it like you stole it. And just so you know coming from a 3rd gen, the 5th gen is faster for sure but no rocket.
What does Toyota call this? is it Tiptronic?
yes used. I didn't even test drive it. until we were driving to the bank. It isn't the end of the world, I just have to learn to drive it. It is faster then my 80s LC for sure with a little gas pedal input. I am not looking for a rocket ship, just to get out of the way.

I must be used to it. I don't have much to complain about. When I was in the mountains 2 weeks ago I drove it like I stole it up and down the switchbacks in the sport mode shifting to keep it in the power. Still got like 15mpg. You'd think I would hate this after my work truck that I drive everyday, a double programmed F350 crew on 33's. But I'm still happy with the runner.
15mph???? I got that driving very easy in both the hwy and the city. I am running through my second tank of gas right now. I got 100 miles on a 1/4 tank on the gauge. Sound right to you. I am trying to be see if mileage improve with me being easy on the gas pedal. I am not sure what's better? get it going and let off or press the gas pedal a little and allow it to get up to speed. That will drive others crazy and I don't really want to to that. If I continue to get crappy mileage driving with mixed driving (generally flat ) what should I be looking for to get a bit more . Close to 18-20 would be nice.

What is the difference between S4 and 4?
I've got a lift and 285 series duratracs but I rarely see above 15mpg.

I've never seen less than 17 MPG and that was with all this stuff on my vacation, average was 18.7 MPG
