5 spd rebuild?

99 3.4, 4wd, 5 spd. anyone done a manual trans rebuild? marlin sell a kit and there are mant aftermarket cheaper versions out there. any experience? thanks

If your surrounding area is anything like Washington, the transmissions are a dime a dozen.

I saw/still see lots of them for $200-$300 with transfer case. Might be easier to buy a new transmission with low miles versus rebuilding. Unless you are doing that yourself as well, shops that rebuild manuals are getting super scarce here.

Yes, I've rebuilt many over the years. If you need your transmission rebuilt, but don't have the tools or experience gained from doing it for a living, I'd suggest finding a reputable transmission shop to do it for you.

You could also buy a used transmission that's still in good shape.

I've never bought anything from Marlin, but I also can't recall hearing anything bad about them.

I've done plenty of manual rebuilds, you need a press and special tools to do it right. The synchros come off easy enough but you need to press off bearings to get to them. It's not a big deal if you take your time and follow some instructions. Get an exploded diagram and pay attention to where things come off and put the gears back in the right spot, you'll be fine

I've got a rebuilt Marlin trans in my truck and a URD short shift kit and ive got a few negative things to say about marlin. First off, marlins customer support is non-existent. they never answer calls or emails, it took me a good 50-60 phone calls to finally reach them. Secondly, when my transmission arrived, BOTH the fill plug and the drain plug were Cross-threaded on and stripped. Big headache...

The transmission itself though, has been great. Shifts like butter and is whisper quiet.

I say find a local shop around you and have it rebuilt.
