5 speed and lockers rare?

Those are great stats. And now I can see why the dealer pushed the manual on me when I was in the showroom. They didn't want to get stuck with it. There was no way I was going to get the A/T with the 3RZ. That truck is a dog!

Yeah i cant imagine how turdish a 3rz with an auto would be. I have two reg cab tacos with the 3rz and 5 speed and i feel like they are friggin slow, atleast for my liking! And those rigs are lite especially compared to a runner!

anniesball72, can you tell us a little more about your swap? There are a lot of clean 01-02 models out there begging for a 5-speed swap. Does everything work including multi-mode? Any idiot lights on?

Thanks.

Everything works with the exception of the VSC/TRAC. Which I'm figuring out. It's actually a much nicer truck to drive with VSC off anyway. Multi-mode works perfectly. The transfer case lever had to be reversed to allow for clearance of the 5 speed.

I used a 2004 Tacoma 3.4l 4x4 5 speed ECM to clear the CEL.

It was really a pretty straight forward swap. Mechanically the only thing I had to do was shorten the front drive shaft a little, the rear was still good.

Mine is a 1999 Highlander package manual trans with factory locker. No running board version too, so it has those somewhat rare front mudflaps.

My wife has a 1996 manual 4Runner, but she swapped the locker onto it. Probably a bit easier to do that vs. finding a manual locker truck these days.

Thanks. Now I just need to convince stuman to get on this. He (and myself included) have been shopping for a clean 5-speed not-high-mileage 4Runner for years with no luck.

That's inspired.

5 speed

i keep looking at 4 runners 96-02 and havent yet seen a 5 speed, are they pretty rare or just nobody sells them? Or do they only come in 4 speed?

Also do all 4x4 4 runners come with lockers or is it pretty much a hit or miss option? Where do i look for that option to be present?

I had a 95 land cruiser with lockers, really miss it, but didnt miss the 11mpg for a daily driver :( so i know with those it was a rare locker option, but i knew what to look for

i have a 97 5 speed 4x4 2.5 ome lift

Most of the V6 5-speeds I have seen have the 4.10 ratio. It meant choosing Extra Value Package 4 (called the Sport package in later years), and many were equipped this way. The ones that don't have it generally have 15" split spoke wheels on the tiny street tires and no fender flares at all (no chrome strips, no black flares, no body colored Limited-style flares). See pic below.

Here are the production numbers for the manual transmission 3rd gens, in percent of sales

1997 Toyota 4Runner - 5 Speed Manual 11.4%
1998 Toyota 4Runner - 5 Speed Manual 8.0%
1999 Toyota 4Runner - 5 Speed Manual 4.5%
2000 Toyota 4Runner - 5 Speed Manual 2.9% (last year offered)

So not only are you trying to find a needle in the haystack with the 5-speed, finding one with a locker on top of that is even harder.

To get the locker you had to order an SR5 4WD with Extra Value Packages 4 and 5. Package 5 was the stand-alone locker option for the 4Runner. This is taken from the 2000 order sheet.

Which of these packages (and years) included the sport edition hood scoop?

I'm in the 11.4 percentile. We also have a '98 v6 automatic 4x4 with elocker.
The real problem is our Wally society increasingly rejects 3-pedal vehicles because over 80% of us live in urban areas (hello traffic).

So I have a rust free 2000 5spd Elocked with 250k that I rolled last week, Andy insurance valued it at $3500 cause they don’t realize how sought after these vehicles are. I tried to talk to them and tell them that it was worth more than that pre roll, but they won’t listen. Any ideas as to what to do to get the true value of my 4Runner?

most insurance companies could care less of pre-roll vs after roll value. they don't care if you put 2500 into rebuilds of suspension... 1k sound systems..detailing..bumpers or 4k+rebuilt motors, to them its normal maintenance
your best option …..regardless of what mods and investments...is to do a comparative for your area
hey.....this is what a 99 in clean condition and this many miles is going for locally......your not gonna get your mod values out of it...that's gonna be a loss.
fortunately I have not had to do this with a 4runner....but when the insurance company tired to low ball me on a bmw 318 convertible that got rear ended..( a nicely lowered super clean modded 318).I said....ok.....find me a replacement or replacement value locally...I even sent them craigslist adds for over 100 miles away...which they could have easily done..I did not get what was invested...but a lot more then what they were first trying to offer me.
got a ton invested ?.....get the best result and buy it back and fix or part it out...that's what I did with my 318....let them total it at an agreed price...bought it back and parted it out and made more

side note: sadly...that was the best budget "sports car" I had ever owned and I have owned other BMW's...triumphs. mg's...jags ( showing my age) ..porches..miata..Nissan z cars...and I never replaced it ….except.....with one slick lowered volvo and now my T4R :)

I have a 2000 5 Speed V6 4x4, no locker. When I picked it up my friends immediately told me I lucked out finding one. It even came with the hood scoop.

As for 4runners being an investment...lol. Toyota produced hundreds of thousands of these and people shouldn't expect these to go for much once insurance gets involved. These trucks hold value well, but will never be worth as much to adjusters as much as they are worth to us enthusiasts.

Funny story, I got rear ended in my 2012 Tacoma and it required a new frame. State Farm wanted to total it for $18,000, and I got them to run a local valuation and it ended up being worth $31K plus tax given its prior condition, specs and mileage. They agreed to repair the truck, and I got a new frame, injury compensation, diminished value and got paid for loss of use. My case wasn't normal though. Lol. It's like I have a brand new truck.

But for what its worth, I'm driving my 4runner until the wheels fall off.
