5 speed and lockers rare?

i keep looking at 4 runners 96-02 and havent yet seen a 5 speed, are they pretty rare or just nobody sells them? or do they only come in 4 speed?

also do all 4x4 4 runners come with lockers or is it pretty much a hit or miss option? where do i look for that option to be present?

i had a 95 land cruiser with lockers, really miss it, but didnt miss the 11mpg for a daily driver so i know with those it was a rare locker option, but i knew what to look for

Not all 4x4's were locked, mine isn't, i have a 5 speed manual with the V6 it is a lot of fun. I get about 17mpg mixed in the winter and 21ish in the summer. Look to the left of the steering wheel for a button that says something like "RR Diff Lock", and the 5 speeds are kinda rare and no one sells um, and if you find one it may be more $$$ than a comperable auto, but the 5 speed in these are bulletproof.

5 speeds are pretty hard to find. Elocked 4runners are pretty hard to find too. A 5 speed with an elocker is just plain rare. I would guess probably 1 out of 100? Maybe less.

5 speed with locker combination (+ 4 cylinder) was only available from 96-2000.

01 and 02 were strictly 5VZ autos with no locker option.

They are very rare, some people try to downplay how rare they are. I searched for 3 years untill I found mine. In that time I saw 6 5speeds and only two had the lockers. One had 180k miles and mine had 56k miles. I have a 96 Sr5 V6 5 speed with an oem E-locker. It's also for sale in the for sale section. 72,XXX miles.

No 01-02 came with lockers at all is what I'm reading.....

There are 96-00 with 5 speed/autos w/ 6cylinders and lockers - all extremely rare combos.

2001 and 2002 models came with a center locking differential, on 4WD models. 01-02 models had AWD and 4WD capability. (Pushing the 4WD button on the transfer case enabled "AWD" for extra traction on dry surfaces without any binding, and engaging the center differential lock split the power between the front and rear axles 50/50, or 4WD). 1999 and 2000 4WD Limited models had this same system in addition to a rear locking differential, theoretically making these two years the "most off road capable", although a rear locker is not necessary for the average wheeler.

Only some '99 and '00 4WD Limited models had the rear locker. All had the AWD, but the rear locker was still just an option.

I don't agree that the center diff lock (AWD) feature makes it more off road capable. AWD will not give you an advantage over 4wd off road - you will never go anywhere in AWD that you couldn't go in 4WD, but there are a lot of places that 4WD will get you that AWD won't.

AWD will give you an advantage on road though, in conditions like patchy snow or black ice. 4WD isn't as good in these conditions because around corners it will bind on the dry parts of the road while AWD will be smooth on the dry and icy parts.

We were told we could only get a rear locker with a manual tranny (5spd, SR5 V6) when we bought our 3rd gen back in 1997.

The wife really wanted auto trans, and I wanted the locker. The dealer said we can't even order them in that configuration (back then anyway).

No one up here where I live wants to sell their 5spd 4Runners. I know if I had one, I would never sell it as they discontinued the manual in 2001. I didn't know until 2002 and walked out on the dealership when they said that it's not available. Oh how I wish I turned around and asked him to find me a used one back in 2002. Now, they're practically impossible to find at when I do find them, the price is just too high or the mileage is too high.

My 2000 has a 5 speed with E locker. During the summer of 99 we saw several at a dealer in Lander,Wyoming and found ours in Colorado Springs. The dealers in Wisconsin claimed their buyer group wouldn't stock them for Iowa, Minnesota and Wisco. Too bad for everyone else, I got mine.

Ok,make that factory equipped AWD vehicles won't go as far as real factory 4wd vehicles. AWD isn't a replacement for 4wd on everyday cars and trucks.
