5 speed with elocker value?

I have a 97 4Runner SR5 with leather seats, sunroof, 5 speed and a from the factory elocker. It has 200,000 miles on it and I may sell it. I know the 4Runners with the 5 speed and elocker are rare but don’t know if it adds that much more value. I have new LBJ’s and an ARB suspension on it both installed about a year ago. I’m in Colorado and it’s rust free

I’m on the fence but have a chance to pick up an 06 Tacoma with 130k at a great price. Damn these decisions ��. Fell free to talk me off the ledge and convince me to keep it. I really do like it but the Tacoma is priced right at $12k

Funny, i hear all the time about people regretting selling 4Rs and last night we were out and about in mine. Parked to go in the store and i saw a guy in a tundra looking hard at us. Didnt think much of it until i walked by and he rolled down his window to say “i love your 4runner, had one just like it and sold it years ago, biggest mistake ever, never sell it!”

That being said, if you sold it i would bet you could get a good amount for the combo but if you’re going to regret it just know you’ll likely pay a premium to find another like it.

I wouldn't sell that if I had that. 200k is low miles for one of these.

Mine's close to 400k, and I couldn't think of anything beside a Tacoma that I would replace it with. The amount I actually need a truck doesn't justify it. I can stick most things on the roof rack, or if I really have to, I can pull a trailer. It's super easy to park compared to my Land Cruiser or Avalon, and feels like a Smart Car compared to a Fullsize Crew Cab 4wd Truck. I don't regret selling any of my pickups, but I don't if I can ever let my 4Runner go!

So are you looking at getting an 06 Taco or a Tundra? I've had both trucks, both crew cabs. The Taco was nice to drive but with no cap the back seat was the trunk...kinda a pain honestly for groceries and such... The Tundra was super nice too but with no cap on mine it felt unstable on twisty icy roads, even with studded tires. Definitely needed a load in the back to stay planted, my $.02. The tailgate skin on the Tundra is tissue paper thin, I think its rare to see one without dents or damage of some type. Also with no cap/cover if I had anything in the bed and it rained or snowed of course it all got wet.

For me the T4R is a more practical dd. I can throw the dog in the back and still have a rear seating area. The dog gets AC in the summer and can't slobber me up lol. Also my T4R is a 3rz so I get 20+ mpg. Taco or Tundra will never hit that, if it matters. I have other vehicles for other duties so if its your only vehicle ymmv.

I bought my '97 SR5/5-spd/ELocker w/120K miles on it in 2013 for $8000 here in the L.A. area. I figured I was paying about $1K more than it was intrinsically worth, AND, as one expects, it needed new tires, springs, shocks to start. Total budget was about $12K, maybe a bit more. Oh, and it was Tucson, AZ car that the PO had brought out to L.A. the week before, then decided to let go(he already had one).
On yours, the OME suspension is a plus, but ball joints are mere maintenance items, and a sunroof is a net negative, as are leather seats.

Is it a Tundra or a Taco? Has it been 4-wheeled much? Did teenagers/yobbos drive it? How many things does it need? Tires, springs, shocks, camper shell?
I had a p/u for 12 years, with a shell on it, and finally decided that the station wagon format (SUV) was the most useful, comfortable and convenient vehicle. Extra points for the shorter wheelbase; I live in the city, and I really don't want to have to parallel park a longer wheelbase thing on the street.

That Taco is a nice looking rig. If you planning on using it for camping where you might want to sleep in the vehicle, remember that the Taco with the short bed has less room for sleeping in the back than a 3rd gen 4Runner. Check for TSBs from Toyota on that year Taco. I read once that they had some front suspension issue(s) the first year or so of the 2nd gen Taco. Good luck!

It's one of those things were rarity doesn't really lead to a higher value. I think the relative scarcity of 5-speed elockers is balanced out but the fact that most people would rather have the automatic.

I did have to search for mine for about 3 or 4 months, and drive two states away to get it, but the price was in line with an automatic 4Runner. I think that there's just a vocal minority of people who like and want manuals, but if you were to sell it, you'd be waiting a long while for the right buyer, the same way a buyer that wants one has to look for a while.

Well they are desirable if you dont want to deal with anything involving the pink milkshake issues.

If you are towing you might prefer the ability to engine brake to slow the vehicle putting less stress and reliance on the brakes.

They are, hands down, the mechanically more reliable option, especially for true 4WD enthusiasts.

Also I think people are going to be surprised what a clean 2000 4Runner Sport Manual with under 150k mi. sells for in the not too distant future...

Thanks guys. This is a difficult decision but after spending the weekend going through the 4Runner and power washing the undercarriage, giving it a thorough cleaning and waxing I’m thinking I’m going to keep it and pass on the Tacoma.

I’m dialed in with suspension, tire size, preventative maintenance with the 4Runner and it’s essentially my side by side with an enclosed cab, heat and air that I can drive to and from anywhere I want to go. May add a winch number and winch and call it a day

Good choice to keep it. You could have sold it for a lot but unless you need a pick up why get rid of such a great vehicle?
