50K checkup for 04 v6 questions

I just reached 50K on my 04 Sport and I wanted to know opinions on what you think is absolutely necessary as far a checkup.

I'm figuring lubing underneath but I'm not sure what else I should be aware of.

1. Should I change the rear end fluid?
2. Tranny flush?
3. Spark plugs?

I've replaced the air filter and cabin filter but I'd like to hear what you guys think I should do in addition to the above.

Plugs should be changed every 30K miles on the V6 engine. So if you're still running the original plugs, I'd say you should definitely change them.

Truth be told, there's very little maintenance on these engines. You may or may not know that the V6 even has timing chains, so no belt to worry about.

Stuff like diff fluid and trans fluid is strictly your call. I don't believe Toyota has either of them as any specific service interval.

Also-- your '04 has 100K coolant from the factory, so don't bother with that yet. I have an '04 also, but I'm just coming up on 40K miles. Other than oil & filter changes, I've only done the following:

Plugs
Air filter
cabin air filter
serpentine belt (mine somehow managed to get small stones embedded in it)
brake fluid flush (during the replacement of the front calipers)

That's it...nothing else has been changed yet.

I've got the plugs but haven't tackled that yet. Do you happen to know the gap value for the plugs?

Check you cat and your breaks. Those are the only 2 things that have gone bad on my 04 with 56K. The rotor locking up sucked bad. The cat was paid for by Toyota - 7year deal.

Yeah, real low miles for me. I have more than one vehicle and I live close to where I work.

Don't remember the spark plug gap, but if you're changing them for the first time, you should have Denso plugs on one side of the engine and NGK on the other side. I chose to buy and install the Denso plugs all around and they were actually all perfectly gapped right out of the box. I was surprised, but it's true.

FWIW, the reason I went with the Denso plugs is because they looked better than the NGK when I compared them side-by-side. For whatever reason, the Densos had less electrode wear and maintained their gap better.

Another tip-- If you decide to change your rear diff fluid, remove the fill plug before you remove the drain plug. More than one guy on the forum drained his rear diff and then discovered that he couldn't get the fill plug out.

Had the brakes done around 45K.

No idea what went wrong with the cat? One morning all the dash lights came on like a x-mas tree? Ran fine to me so only diff was all the sensors going off? Glad it was under the 7year 100,000 cause it would have cost $800 to replace. The guy at Daytona Toyota acted like it was kind of common?

50k on an '04? Check you're odometer. You're not putting enough mileage on that car! LOL!

Every Toyota (6, including my current T4R) I've owned had near or over 120,000 miles by the 6 year mark. :thumb3:

I think you got it just about covered. Change the plugs if they have never been changed. Diff fluids are up to you. If you tow a lot then you should change them. Not sure if the 04 transmission is sealed like my 05. Grease the drive shaft probably inspect your brake pads all around to so how much they have left and finally a wash and detail to keep the car looking good.
