5100/Eibach Install

Alright guys, I did search to no avail. Only thing I found on the exact topic I am questioning was for newer gen Runners. So, I have everything to install the lift on the front of the truck. 5100s W/ Toytec/Eibach coils. My question is what setting should I place them at for the lift Im trying to achieve. I want to get the full 3'' up front. Any help is appreciated guys and if the answer is already posted somewhere, I apologize for the redundant post.

Are they Taco or Tundra 5100s?

it does not matter, the low med and high settings are all the same between the two. the only difference between them is the tundras have an extra setting between the low and med, and then again between the med and high.


you will want them set on the lowest setting, other wise you will blow out the struts, ask me how i know...
 
yes the lowest setting is the stock setting. the coil is a 3" lift coil. you go any higher than that you will overextend the shock/strut and you will run the risk of other damages to things like ball joints and CV axles

Many people run 5100 tundra /eibachs on 2nd perch without a problem though ?? I have my eibachs and getting the tundra shocks Tuesday, I was told to run it on 2 perch with superflex in the back. Should I be worried ??

i dont know who told you to run them on the 2nd perch, but who ever did does not have experience with this. i have blown two sets of the tundra 5100s doing so, and i have seen another have the same issue. as soon as i dropped mine down to the lowest setting i was fine. if you are looking for extra height because of extra weight, then id suggest a top hat/plate spacer, that goes between the top of the sturt and the strut tower/top mount on the frame. that is what i did, and it works perfectly. but do not run them on anything other than the lowest setting. -you also run the risk of over loading and damaging the C-clips/snap-rings that hold the coil seat in place. again, ask me how i know.

no worries. and thank you. its been a long road, and id say its about 2/3 of the way done... no i just have to work on the small things, the things that really no one would notice or see everyday, but things that i will notice and enjoy.

interesting... this is new to me, and good info as i have not seen the two side by side before like that... i was always told that the two are the same other than the added two perches of the tundra strut -this is what i was told from toytec when i first called them and inquired about the two...

i tried to run my eibachs on the 2nd perch twice with the tundra 5100s, and both times i blew them out, as well as deforming the snap-ring. when i dropped down to the bottom the problem has not returned. -to be clear here i have not disassembled them to check the snap-rings as i have had no need to, the struts are not blown. maybe i just got second bad set of struts? i know the first set blew cause i started life with them at the middle setting and that didnt last long, the second set was at the next lower setting and they lasted like 6months. maybe it was a bad set idk. im not gonna risk it though.
 
So now it gets interesting. Some say yes on 2nd perch some say no....... Curious as to what top hat you using ? Since the rear superflex coils provide 3.75" of lift. Would that be to much rake if you to go with lowest setting on 5100 ? What top hat would you recommend
 
Well If ToyTec is willing to warranty them and stand be hind them I'd go with what ToyTec is saying... I'm just saying I'm not doing it at this point

Toytec does not recommend using the Tundra 5100s and has not done any testing on the Tundra/Eibach combination. I spoke to them about this a few weeks ago after being less than satisfied with the lift I got out of their coils. I may try the second perch here in the future and see what happens.
 
I doubt toytec or bilstein or anyone for that matter is going to touch this with a warranty or recommendation ,after all the tundra shocks are not even designed for our vehicle .also the placement in the stroke due to the coil pre-load might contribute to how these shocks perform .say for instance: if your low in the stroke say on perch one or high on the stroke at say three you might be bottoming or extending the shock more than its valving in this posistion was designed to handle .not saying second perch is the answer but after simply comparing the tacoma and tundra shock body side by side and their perch locations ,the second perch setting for the tundra 5100's looks logical to me ,after all rcd/bilstein did do testing on them and those are the perch location rcd chose .and toytec recommends the first clip on the taco's for their designed coil spring rate for three inches of lift.no ?

Yes - Toytec does have a recommendation - use their coils with Tacoma/4runner shocks.

I do not know what Toytec based their design on but here is a portion of an email to me on their coils:

The 112-620 coil springs are a 620 lb spring rate. This means it takes 620lbs to compress them 1 inch. They are 15” long and fully compressed is about 7.5”. The spring rate is measured at about 12”. Let’s just say installed, depending on the shock and clip setting they are at 12”. From 12 to 7.5 is 4.5” of travel, this would take 2790lbs per spring to full compression or 5580 lbs for the pair. These #’s are for example and there are variables. Spring rate will change throughout the compression and extension as you get closer or further to full spec. We have been using this coil for years on the 3rd, 4th, 5th gen 4Runners, 1st, 2nd gen Tacomas, and all FJ’s. The spring was designed for our applications and has worked well.

Vehicles do have some variations, especially when you get into using non application specific parts, the variables increase. Not to say I don’t appreciate trying other parts and do agree that Tundra and LC parts are going to usually be beefier than 3rd gen parts. I am all for you building the truck as strong as possible. I try to do the same with mine.


So, it sounds to me like they designed the spring to be 12" in length at rest on the shock.
