5100 or 6112

Hi all. Looking to replace my shocks here soon. I am planning on doing the .85" setting and running either 265 or 275 all terrains.

Almost 100% of my time is spent on the pavement. A couple times a year I am in snow but no need for "off road performance".

Should I save some coin and go with the 5100s? I want to have the most comfortable ride and prevent some of the nose dive.

You should be ok with the 5100s. I was told by a suspension shop (Toytec?) not to use preload to get lift. My 5100s are on the lowest setting with taller springs creating the 2.5” lift. You might also get a stiffer ride at the .85” setting than at the 0” setting. (I don’t have any info about who sells ~1” lift springs.)

With a brand new full front suspension, my nose dive was gone and body roll was also greatly reduced.

I have no rake right now. This Spring or Summer, I might add 1/2” spacers to my rear springs for just a little rake.

I only get 10-12 MPG, but I don’t drive much.

Whether to get 6112s is often a tough choice for people who are looking for off road performance so if it's between these two, the 5100s. But because 5100s are designed for the extra weight typically found on built rigs, people with trucks that are all or mostly stock often find the ride too firm. So you might also check out options like Rancho that are geared toward stock vehicles, cost less, and deliver a comfortable ride on the pavement. FWIW, my fronts are from a 2020 Tacoma TRD Offroad and I have 4600s and FJ springs on the rear. Truck is level and rides great on the road and the trails.

I just put a set of 5100's on my 2021 Trail Edition. I went 1.75" on the front and put 1" Cornfed spacer in the back. Still has a slight rake. Really happy with how it looks and it's a definite improvement in overall ride and handling.

Itd be nice to be able co compare rides side by side to get an idea. Unfortunately, I think few people have had that opportunity.

reviews say that the 6112 rides really nice, but again will be paying more and it may be harder to find in stock. If you have that extra money to spend, and wont regret over paying, may be the way to go.

The 5100s are the most common and most people are happy with them. They are a 2.0 shock, so in the same class as the fox 2.0, and other 2 inch body shocks.

If nyou wont be off roading, you may want to work at struts/ shocks/ coilovers that are more designed for sport handling/ baja type off roading like the Fox shocks or if you have the money Kings or other shocks that are adjustable

I've still got the stock 265 Bridgestones on my truck. I plan on going to 275/70/17 at some point, most likely K02's. Can't speak to the 6112's.

Having done a quick comparison of my ride - KDSS with Eibach (digressive dampening) and a Limited with Dobinsons (progressive dampening) over the weekend my suggestion would be that whatever you do, if you have KDSS, go with progressive dampening.
The ride is much nicer.

FWIW, I did the 6112's on the front of mine and 5160's with T13's on the back and it sits with a slight rake. Bothers me but I can't complain about the ride

Depends on 4runner Generation

I run tundra 5100s on my 3rd gen and really liked the 6112s on my 4th gen. The 5100 are damped for the heavier tundra and if paired with the trd coils produce a great ride. The 6112s are nice b/c theyre already paired with coils and produce a great ride...
