5100 vs 5160?

Do any 3rd gens run rear Bilstein 5160 shocks? I know there are none "made" specifically for 96-02 but I figured it would be worth a shot. I want to upgrade my 5100s without breaking the bank on remote reservoir icons, 5160 seems like a good upgrade if it can work with stock mounting locations

So people do put them in the 3rd gen? For what you get for the price I would have thought it would be a popular swap. Do you know what length you sold?

Can't find it. But the FJ fitment might work if the shocks lengths are correct.

If anyone tries these let me know. My 5100's/890 feel too soft when loaded. Just moved to the OME891's to combat it and the 5160 looks like it might be a good compliment.

Yea, figuring out the fitment is the hardest part. By any chance do you know the bilstein part # for the 5100's that everyone uses with their 3" lift? Once we find specifics, its just a matter of finding 5160's that are the same length/stroke

I used 33-185590 on my 3rd gen paired with OME 891s. The shocks are actually made for tacomas but I used an adapter. They're the same ones Toytec sells that come with the adapters.

Actually, disregard that. I just realized I ran 5125's in the rear, not 5100's.

It is looking like that is what I'm running too. I've asked the guys at Wheelers what their take is on it. I really don't want to spend the money on Kings/Icon or Fox but maybe that is the next step up?

although those are 5125's, it looks like they have an 8" stroke. So theoretically, if there are 5160's with an 8'" stroke and same mounting design, they should fit! :banana:

It is looking like that is what I'm running too. I've asked the guys at Wheelers what their take is on it. I really don't want to spend the money on Kings/Icon or Fox but maybe that is the next step up?

Icon has some relatively cheap 2.0s but non resevoired if you want a for sure fit

Edit: So Wheelers Offroad wrote me back and they have taken some 5160's off a 05+ taco and transplanted them on a 3rd gen. They had to press out the lower bushing and press in one that would fit. His comment is the fitment is very tough as it is difficult to cram a remote reservoir anywhere.

Their recommendation to me is to go OME. Per WO they are better for heavy loads.

Hmm didn't think about the bushing, assumed it was all the same size. Did they say that the reservoir would not be able to ride piggyback in a 3rd gen?

They were able to do it - it was just a PITA finding a spot that the tire wouldn't rub. I'm sure if you trim the inner fender a bit you could sneak it on top of the frame. He just said fitment was tough.

24-014786 - It's the stock fit for 90-97 Landcruiser, rear.

It's about 1-1/2"longer than the stock 96-02 4Runner rear. Let me know if you need them.

You can run 5100's 4600's 5160's and the stock trd offroad front struts from a 1st gen taco.
Thats about as much as i know about Bilstein.
5100= between stock and 3" lift
4600= 2.5"
5160= unknown (by me)
1st gen taco struts= 2"

I liked the ride, it was no Cadillac but it wasn't bad. Only issue I had was trying to keep the top bolt on the left adapter tight. For whatever reason it liked to loosen up, other than that I just pressed new bushings in and they were fine.
