5G Limited Braking

Last night I had to stop very quickly and as several others have attested my Limited does not have the same braking performance that my Acura TL did. My concern is there was a lot of skidding. None of our other vehicles do this or have done this. Including 2000 Acura TL, 2005 Honda Odyssey, or our 2002 Sequoia. Has anyone else noticed this? I guess I will ask about it on my next deal visit. Any experiences are appreciated.

A) of course a 4,800 lb. truck isn't going to stop as quickly as a 2,700 lb car.

B) All cars will slide on ice.

My limited doesn't stop as well as my old WRX STi with big shiny BREMBO's...what gives??

Its not so much it didn't stop as fast it was the skidding that bothers me. I have never had a vechicle (with antilock) that skidded so much. It wasn't icy the temp was probably in the low 60's

I had a big time emergency stop last summer when a dog ran out in front of the 4 Runner. To say the very least, I was blown about by the performance of the brakes. Absolutely freakin' awesome. Dog okay. Pants filled. All good.:happens:

There may be something wrong....I'd definitely get it checked out.

I've been driving in snow, ice and rain w/ no slippage.

Dude,

Did the truck stay in control? There will be some skidding I would think, but the ABS should keep everything in check, and prevent you from losing control. Is your ABS light on? If you maintained control and had/have no ABS malfunction light, you are good. No worries. You got to believe in your 4 Runner. This thing is freakin' perfect!

If something was wrong with the ABS, you would have a light on. Don't overthink it. This is a big truck. If it didn't skid, you would be worried about braking distances. If it does skid, you are worried about skidding. The big issue here is did the truck do what it was supposed to do? I think that sometimes people feel that ABS means that you have no tire noise or whatever. When you say that you skidded, did the brakes lock? Or, are you referring to a noise that sounded like skidding? The brakes locking is defined by the wheel(s) stop turning, and you slide out of control. Did your 4 Runner do that? If not, you are fine. Seriously. I cannot imagine an ABS system malfunctioning without throwing a dash light.

I wouldn't go that far....especially when it comes to the brakes.

But yeah, it's a fine truck, no doubt.

I agree, I think the brakes are subpar. Extremely disappointing.

Maybe I am just not used to the Brake assist after reading Risers post today.

I notice most if not all the braking comments are from people new to 4Runners.They feel the same as my 4th Gen to me and were maybe a little more grabby at first when new but work fine now. They are a bit quirky until you get used to them.Any body else that owned a 4th Gen have comments on them feeling the same?

When I bought my new 2006 4runner ,I thought the brakes sucked too til I got used to them. Matter of a fact they cost me a LCD for my old laptop as the first month I had it my laptop launched from the front seat into the dash and cracked the LCD on what was far from a panic stop!

Then this summer ,I let my brother-in-law drive my truck and he would have thrown me thru the windshield if I didn't have my seat belt on when he went to brake for a car pulling out 1/4 mile up the road.

The EBD and brake assist came out in the 4runners in 2001 so it is not new technology in the 4Runners.. # 9 in changes.... Toyota 4Runner History 2001 Is that a great website or what?

I totally agree, Harper, that most people commenting on the sensitivity of the brake assist are new 4runner owners/drivers. My Infiniti had the brake assist, but it was nowhere near as invasive as Toyota's. I understand that an SUV needs more time to stop, so maybe that was their thinking. Anyway, I'd rather have it than not have it. You really only need it to work correctly once before it becomes worthwhile.
