5spd or Auto off road...

Greetings again all!

I was just wondering what people think the advantages and disadvantages are to 5spd vs Auto off road?

I may have to sell my 1998 5spd Runner and get an auto limited as my knee is not the greatest any more... (sucks cause I love this thing)

Wondering if I will lose big time on the trade (the reliablity of the standard and manual transfer case...)

Cheers!

LET THE WAR BEGIN!

auto rules, it is far better and superior in every way to a stick shift, always has been always will be , with auto you can easily drive in stop and go traffic and control steep ascents, not to mention chicks like guys who have a free hand to grab them with instead of always playing with their sticks, also with the addition of this you get the capability to eat burgers do your make up and various other things that shouldn't be done while driving, but who cares about that? it's just cool!!!!:drummer::guitar2::drummer::boink::biggrin2::toilet:

ok sarcasm off,

i would say auto is fine for a vast majority of 4x4's and the fact that your asking leads me to believe that it may actually be better for you then a stick shift , you will love it, less work and more fun and no more strain on your knee. i'm not saying this as a fanboy of the auto off road but more so just taking your problems into consideration, they are both equal in terms of performance on the trail unless your part of the 2% ultra hardcore dual t case lifted 31 feet in the air guys, but for most of us it's great and have zero complaints.

but this is one of those topics when arguments happen every time it comes up....

so my statement to everyone who wants to fight, is go with whats right for you and what you enjoy!

All my trucks are auto, except the one I wheel, an '87.
I have the bad knee syndrome too. Sometimes I wish I had an auto, but this little truck is anemic enough without slapping an auto in it.

When my '99 is finally set up for wheeling, I'll let you know the difference.

I don't know why you would put yourself through pain for an option that comes down to personal preference.

I vote for the Auto.

that's because I'm a man.

post-op right?
just like this guy!

Personally I prefer a manual due to the additional control. I have seen beginners and intermediate drivers stall their trucks during difficult hill climbs, no bueno. There are arguments in both camps, but the argument seems to favor the auto in most cases.

I would recommend a slush box. Everything is easier.

All of the off road capable vehicles I own right now are auto.

well... here we go.
Auto is nice for people who are learning how to wheel, or find themselves generally nervous in the hard sections. It can be tricky to use the clutch if you are not comfortable. Autos are nice for the majority of driving. and they sure are nice to wheel the hard stuff with

However I have a manual trans in my 4runner and wheel the heck out of it and love it. I seriously would never have a trail rig that is an auto, but then again its personal preference. I love the control i get with the clutch, automatics can have issues building up enough torque when going really slow.

its whatever you like. I learned how to drive with a manual trans, and now i own two vehicles and both are 5spd.

couldn't you just move the D to "1" to get that extra tq when going slow, i mean it's still 1st gear after all.....

hey guys what's better green or blue?:flamethrwoer2:

I hope you realize this is not a flatout Auto vs manual offroad, there is a stipulation that his knee is going...

Dammit, everytime this thread pop's up to the top of the list, I pass that picture of the pregnant man as I scroll down and it creeps me out.

Thanks Izzard, you d!ck.

once you go dual t-cases, you will never want a auto. not just because it makes driving a manual easier. but that extra torque from the dual t cases will sometimes overpower your brakes with an auto. i prefer to have a clutch but i also do see the appeal of the auto.

bwahaha, it was just the "i'm a man" comment, i always thought real men didn't have to say it....lol

Manual FTW! :driving:

Basically with a manual 4Runner like mine you have 15 gears to choose from. Instant torque plus 3 reverse gears.
Nothing like grabbing 3rd gear low range when hitting a deep mud hole.

When I was first learning to drive my dad made me use a manual. Said anyone can drive an automatic. But I did have a 1972 Grand Torino Sport with an auto. Had a 351 Cleveland that was a screamer. Only car I ever owned that would go faster up hill than down hill.

it's all sixes for me, but i like the comfort of the auto on the road in the runner and love the manual in my subaru
