5speed 3rd gen clutch question (3.4)

for you guys who have the 5speed 3.4 . . .


so im a little late on "worrying" about this problem because i replaced my clutch around 40,000 miles ago, but anyways. . ..

when i am sitting still (gear shifter in neutral position), when i have the clutch pedal fully depressed i can hear no ticking. . .

when i let my foot off the clutch pedal (whether its hot, cold, just started, raining, quickly, or slowly) its starts too tick in sync w the engine.

mechanic says no biggy. just the pilot bearing or some crap like that that is shakin around. and before anyone nails my mechanic to the ground, please dont (hes a 27 year lexus/yota master mechanic and knows his stuff - and will not put an aftermarket part on a toyota or lexus - which tells me he doesnt mess around). i am just wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue AFTER a new clutch/fresh flywheel (resurfaced) has been installed...

sounds like a noisy pilot bearing, or possibly a throwout bearing. No big deal, they can make noise for years and work fine. I would leave it and not worry about it

exactly what he said. no effects on performance or shifting. theres just a noise. he said new pilot bearing was just "moving around" a little, but in no way can hinder the performance.

No problem, yeah the throwout bearings are notorious for making noises, especially replacement ones. It may tick for years but who cares if it shifts fine. If its a pilot bearing it may be a little loose, totally fine. if something goes seriously wrong it will be obvious.

i just think its odd....toyota replacement parts should ALMOST always fit like a glove. at least all the ones ive used have at least. . . but i guess ive never replaced a clutch.

I'm on my third. Yeah, two teenagers learning to drive literally fried the first one at 19,000 miles and the second one exploded at 110K, it didn't wear out. But none of the three ever ticked. I don't think it would bother me if one had, however.

its just hit and miss. Its even worse with parts store clutches. Sometimes you get a clutch kit and hesitate about putting the cheap bearings in because its a PITA to remove the trans for a small $5 pilot bearing.

there sure are not many 5spd 3rd gens. I love mine.

I have a 5 spd also. However I have not mess with the clutch at all yet. I hope I don't have to until I finish all my other projects.

I to love my 5 spd. If this truck had a SC on it I think I would die.

Clutch chatter?

My clutch was just replaced at about 80K (2000 SR5, 3.4). I usually do everything myself, but had a mechanic I like a lot do this one. He did use an aftermarket, but good quality, clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and had the flywheel resurfaced.
At first I thought it was just because I had to become reaccustommed to a new clutch, I still occasionally get a 'chatter' on start. Is there something I should have had adjusted? or will this go away?? or is it just because I can't quite get the throttle / clutch in synch?

Your mechanic is right.
I have owned three Toyota 5 speeds (1983, 1990, 1998) and everyone of them has made the same noise that you describe.

I replaced the 1990 clutch two years ago and with less then 22k miles on it right now, and it makes the same noise when I replaced it at 130k

I have had a chattering clutch in my 4runner. It was a napa clutch. Some of the pressure plate fingers broke off, i think this may have been a factor in the chatter. if you dont have a cheapo clutch it sounds like you could have a contaminated clutch plate. Maybe your mechanic got some oils on it. There really is very little adjustments on out clutch system. Basically all there is is pedal freeplay.

Im guessing the chatter is only on fast accelerations from a complete stop. Right? thats how mine was.

I have the same noise. Mine was replaced recently with all OEM stuff.
Mine is not loud at all, But I do notice it because the engine is so quiet while it's running.

I'm on my 2nd 5speed. my 99 I replaced the clutch with a kit from marlincrawler and loved it. Never made a sound. and on my current 98 I'm rebuilding the motor and going to use a LC performance clutch to keep up with the supercharger and fresh motor and will see if there is any noise

Right - from complete stop, usually when on an incline or fast acceleration. Hate to think I have to go have a talk with the mechanic... thanks

I'm coming up on 225K and have noticed it slipping a little if I get on it hard but only some times.

I think the spring on my clutch pedal might be getting a little weak as when it does slip, if I let off the gas and pull up on the clutch pedal it doesn't slip any more.

Just trying to decide if it's something I want to tackle or have a real mechanic do it.

ya i put in a oem aisin clutch kit i got off ebay real stuff not the knock off crap and did it all by the book and it ticks some

Its not all that bad besides wrestling the trans and transfer case out of the truck. its a weekend job

I believe the current clutch has nearly 90k miles on it and I have burned it to the point where smoke has come up from under the truck. Scary, and I haven't rodded on it since.

BTW, I have done the clutch spring mod, with the similar sized brake spring. At full release of the clutch pedal, the spring touches part of the clutch pedal arm and rattle against it not all the time but every now and then. To those of you with 5spds who have done this mod, is this normal or is my spring too big in diameter?

It's not too difficult to do if you have the right tools. My friend and I did his in a day, but if you haven't done a clutch before it may take a few.

It sounds like your clutch return spring isn't doing it's job. If the clutch pedal isn't all the way up when driving, there is less normal force and thus less friction force on the clutch so it may slip a little. You could do the clutch spring mod. That made my pedal return all the way.

My spring doesn't touch or rattle against anything. You may have attached the spring to the wrong little bracket (I did that at first). There are two from what I remember. There is one that has an electrical connector attached to it, and one that has nothing attached. You want to use the one with nothing attached (it's a little higher). That or your spring has a larger diameter...

I will say that when my friend and I did his clutch we ended up doing it again because the throw out bearing started to squeak. He just drove across the country for grad school and apparently the throwout bearing's squeaking again. It won't hurt anything, it's just annoying. He used a Napa clutch.

I've always felt Napa had quality parts, but I'm not getting my clutch there when mine goes out...
