5th gear whine

as the title suggests i have a loud "whine" that only happens in fifth gear and only happens while im accelerating,as soon as i let off the accelerator the whine goes away.the faster i go the more high pitch it gets.It seems to be getting a little louder and im thinking about accepting a job thats requires highway use to get there,which means im going to have to use my fifth gear more often so I really want to figure this out.thanks for any help.Ive hear either my gear is worn down or my tranny pump is on the fritz.

I have the same problem, in fourth and in fifth. Annoying.

Manual trans problems usually start with the 5th gear whine. My 84 does it a bit now. Usually you can go a long time before it gets bad enough to replace the trans.

Hate to ask the obvious but when is the last time you changed the gear oil?
