Hey guys I just bought my 2016 4runner trail edition. I need some help and information about CB RADIOS and installation. I want an affordable build. Can you guys plz help.:bump::frisky::drum:

I keep the cb radio in the glove box until I need it with the only thing left visible inside is the black plastic mic holder on the dash. I did have to extend the coax by about 5 feet but it's easy to do. This setup tuned really good and works good as well.

That being said, we will probably switch to a HAM setup down the road but I need to study up on what I want first.

Congrats on the new ride. IMHO, the best bang for your buck, and install that deoesnt require alot of cutting would be something like the cobra 75wxt. Get a mag mount antenna, or if you want more permanent get a Rago ditch bracket and attach the antenna to that. I started with that cb and used a couple write ups here, worked great on the trail. Not much need for more really, I upgraded to a really nice bearcat with SSB but even though it wasn't much more I don't think it was worth it.

If I was doing it again I'd probably get a hand held cb and a permanent Ham install.

NMO Lip Mount
NMO CB Antenna
NMO Rain cap so you can go through car washes or get into low parking garage
and don't forget a CB antenna SWR meter to tune your antenna

After tuning I'm running about 1.25 SWR with this setup

I have the Midland 75-822 with a Wilson 5000 magnetic antenna. SWR at 1.1. The set was tweeked by my truck stop CB shack to make sure it was putting out max legal watts. Out of the box it was down nearly 1 watt.

Works just fine. No it ain't a Cobra 29 but for me with hearing aids and considering the fidelity of CB plus road noise, having the ability to put the speaker near my ear(s) where an aid is located is far better than my 29 with the speaker well away from my aid(s).

Going through this right now. No room in this thing to mount my Cobra 29 as i had it in my JK. Purchased the 75 whatever to see how it does. looks like it'll install pretty easily.

I did purchase a set of CBI ditch light mounts, as a set (which has free shipping) is the same price as 1 (their antennae mount) with shipping. If you want a drivers side mount, let me know. Otherwise i'll just sell it when teh pair comes in.

Hey brotha I'm trying to go with firefly antenna how is it?? What's the best size 3' or 4' :zoom: what's better ham radio like the truckers or the Midland ones

Thanks for the info. What's the different from HAM radios to the Wilson one you were mentioning? Is the HAM radios the one truckers use? I'm such a greenhorn lol

Ham radio is on different bands than CB. Ham also allows you to transmit at higher powers than CB. Downside to Ham is you need to take an exam and get a license, but the exam is easy. Other option is race radio, which are commercial radios used by off-road racers and widely adopted by off-road drivers in general.

if you dont want CB, and don't want Ham, just get some FRS/GMRS bubble pack radios, the quality and range is plenty fine for convoy and trail rides

Where did you run the coax to the outside of the vehicle?

I ran the coax through the taillight housing area then up to the rear of the cargo rack. I think there's some pics in the build thread.

Something to consider when mounting an antenna is what your antenna pattern looks like.
