5th Gen 4Runner Fiberglass- Production/Discussion

Hey guys,

Over the past few weeks I've been talking to a couple shops willing to develop fiberglass fenders for 5th gen/2010+ 4Runners.

After some discussion between both shops, I've narrowed it down to one, as they were more receptive to designing things that fit our needs- the other shop was more of duplicating their existing designs on other trucks (Tacomas, Tundras, etc). Since this shop also does everything by hand and in-house with small quantities, the quality is also a lot better albeit at a slightly higher price. They've asked that I don't release their name for the time being until the prototyping phase is done to avoid too many inquiries.

Some of the planned designs:
Front fenders
- 2 to 3" bulge, 1" rise from factory. Should clear most mid- and long-travel kits.
- Removing material from the back of the fender, elimination of the rocker panel trim piece (will likely be molded onto fender but with better clearance). This may be specific to 2010-2013 Trail editions, 2014+ SR5/Trail/Pro as the older models have larger rockers.
- Relocation of lower fender bolt point for additional clearance (will likely be a relocated bracket or mount).
- Option for an ARB snorkel is being considered. If you view most fiberglass kits, you need to run a custom snorkel underneath the fiberglass since most kits do not accommodate aftermarket snorkels. Model for snorkel clearance will have a recessed pocket for the ARB snorkel, reinforced on the back for mounting points.

Rear fenders
- Still being considered. Likely will be just a 2-3" bulge to match the fronts, no rise.
- If this is done, will entail three separate pieces: a rear door panel, a quarter panel, and another rear bumper piece to for those with different rear bumper setups.
- There are some complexities: without extensive door/quarter panel modifications its difficult to get a lot of additional clearance.

Some recent photos of their work to show the quality of the fiberglass and some details. Unlike most production fiberglass pieces, they like to retain as many factory attachment points as possible.

THIS IS A SAMPLE BASED ON ANOTHER TRUCK, NOT THE 5TH GEN SPECIFIC FENDERS:

If you happen to recognize their work, please don't post their info until we finish prototyping :bigok:

I'll be dropping off the truck May 12 to start prototyping, and it should be done with final production models on the truck by mid or late June. They will make production molds based on whether we can get enough interest for a small run.

Let me know if anyone has any additional design input on these.

UPDATE #1- 07/31/17
Mockups are almost complete, moving to produce my set soon. Details on the design, etc. are in the post below.
See this post

Design notes:
- 2.5-3" additional clearance from stock
- No rise
- Maintains factory fit and design by pushing out the fenders from the body line.
- Snorkel model will be developed after mine is done 08/05.
- Pricing set at $600/pair. Will need 10 deposits to move to produce molds for these.

UPDATE #2- 08/07/17

Fenders are officially done and ready for preorder. They'll be making the mold once we fulfill 10 preorders, or once I finish my trip in Wyoming/Colorado for some testing to make sure there's no issues with clearance- whichever comes first.

New fender clearance is at the 8" mark, OEM fender at 5" mark. Nets about 3" of additional inner fender clearance.

Excuse the Shrockworks filler plate quality under the headlights, makes all the fender lines look off. These pics show the nice and clean lines. Hood to fender fitment are slightly off, but will be adjusted on the final production pieces.

Door to fender fitment is a bit tight, but normal due to the additional thickness of fiberglass vs. OEM fender. The doors don't hit at all.

Looks factory!

Final design notes:
- These will fit all 2010+ 5th gen 4Runners.
- Net change is about 3" of additional clearance vs. the stock fenders.
- No rise planned currently, although this could change with the final production models.
- Snorkel models can also be preordered now, they have a design in mind, but they just want to make sure that nothing is wrong with the production pieces before they design the snorkel side.
- The lower fender mount was left intact, cap was left unblended due to varying slider designs. However, they way the lower fender is designed, you can easily modify the lower mount to eliminate the factory lower bolt that everyone seems to hit. I'll be posting a writeup about it this week.
- Unlike other fiberglass fenders on the market, these are made of hand-laid fiberglass vs. chop. This results in a slightly thicker than factory product, but is still thinner than most fenders. Also is very strong and light.
- All OEM attachment points are intact and clearly indented, taking the guesswork out of fitting the fenders.
- When ordering, you can elect for white gel coat (close to OEM Super White), black gel coat, or sandable black gel coat.

Pricing starts at $600/pair for the non-snorkel versions, extra $50 for the snorkel versions as these require different molds and are made of stronger fiberglass. 50% deposit required from 10 sets in order to produce these.

You can place preorders today by calling McQueen Fiberglass Designs at (310) 327-2337 or emailing [email protected].

I'm interested in it for this reason! I don't want to run any more caster, but I need a way to gain more clearance from that pesky lower fender bolt! #305problems

Yep. Pretty much what prompted me to look into this. I've been noticing my fender keeps getting bowed out because it's been hitting that mount. I've also been hitting the top of my flare under full compression, the rise on these new fenders should help with that clearance.

I'm in depending on the integration with the snorkel. I just put mine on last weekend. I could really use the bracket relocation.

Seems like this bottom brace has been an issue for everyone including me. We'll definitely make sure it happens.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys! Keep it coming!
