5th-gen 4Runner reliability - let's get better stats

I wanted more up-to-date car reliability information that included actual repair rates. So in late 2005 I started getting people together to make this possible. TrueDelta now updates actual repair frequencies, not just dots, four times a year, for quick initial stats on new models and to track cars closely as they age.

We've had very good participation by 4Runner owners, with nearly 500 signed up so far. I'd like to have some quick stats for the 2010 4Runner--just a matter of how quickly enough owners get involved.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, participants receive full access to all results, not just those for the 4Runner, for free.

We've posted an initial result for the 2010 4Runner, based on owner experiences through the end of June. None of the 17 owners participating has reported a repair yet. Small sample size, but zero repairs is always a good sign.

We'll need at least 25 responses to provide a full result with the next update, in November.

Starting this month we have a new question to measure, as objectively as possible, the severity of a problem. Many people have been asking for reliability stats that weight problems by how severe they are, and once we have enough responses with the revised survey we'll start providing this.

Also, updated reliability stats this month.

As always, the more owners participate, the better the information we can provide to everyone.

We have an updated result for the 2010 4Runner based on owner experiences through September 30, 2010. With a reported repair frequency of 18 repair trips per 100 cars per year, the 2010 is better than average.

Thank you, everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in February and May. With more participants, we could provide more precise information.

oh he's here too.
Heads up guys, this poster does not understand the "privacy" of the emails.. After I signed up on this joker's site, i began being bombarded by him and his bs emails.

Same happened to many other members of the board where I am moderator, which lead to him being banned.

As explained on your site, emails are only sent for the survey. Those who respond as they signed up to do receive very few of them. Reminders are sent to those who haven't responded, because these roughly double the response rate. People who decide they don't want to participate can simply request to unsubscribe at any time. A one-word email that takes perhaps ten seconds to write does the trick.

We have tens of thousands of people who've been active participants, some of them for over five years. Many send me emails thanking me for my efforts. Some even thank me for the reminders, because they fully intend to participate but initially forget to do so.

A few people on your board, including yourself, instead opted to neither respond nor unsubscribe, then complain on the board about receiving the emails you signed up to receive.

I even sent some PMs asking for account info, so I could cancel them--I cannot identify accounts based on forum user names. But these members preferred to keep complaining on the board rather than get back to me.

Made no sense to me, but the way it was.

As we explained to you on our board, we DID submit the requests. Multiple times.
But clearly, you were not able to comprehend that back then, nor can you do it now.

But hey, i'm not going to argue with you on here too, you were explained everything. Multiple times. Like it or not, you are a spammer.
Enjoy spamming those thousands of people, my message was merely to inform others of your practices.

Every forum sends a high volume of email to people who subscribe to threads. No doubt some of the recipients no longer want to receive these emails. But they don't unsubscribe from the threads. Does this make the forums spammers? Of course not--the people subscribed to the threads, they asked to receive the emails. The forums can't know they no longer want to receive them unless this is communicated.

It's rather simple. There's nothing to comprehend. I get an email to unsubscribe, I deactivate the account. If I don't receive an email in my inbox, even if one was sent, I can't.

Someone claims to have sent an unsubscribe email, but none was received, less than once a month. Every time this happens I ask the person to forward the earlier request, so I can look into it. Not once has such an email been forwarded. This is total, out of over 70,000 members going back over five years.

I should say that I'm getting about one e-mail each month from truedelta.com and it usually says that if I didn't have issue I don't have to do anything. The only thing about truedelta I wanted to change is to put some weight to repairs. So a trip to replace failed power seat motor won't be counted the same as to trip to replace transmission.

I, too only receive 1 email a month. A very nice email asking if I have any repairs to report. If no repairs, then it states no action needed.

I have been very happy and proud to help with truedelta's reliability figures.

I have no affiliation what-so-ever with truedelta - FYI. No issues at all from me!

Thanks, guys. One note: we do ask for an approximate odometer reading following the end of each quarter even if there have been no repairs.

right.. for some reason 100+ members did have that problem, but hey.. what do I know.

Three or four people were complaining in that thread, including you. How you get from this to 100+ is beyond me. There were never even nearly 100 Scion tC owners signed up from your forum. Maybe 30, and probably not that many.

Thanks, guys.

you were banned because Myself and an administrator kept getting complaints. But, of course, we just came up with random complaints to mar your godly presence.

like I said, I had complaints, due to which you were banned.
And do not claim that you have been trying to help those who had reached out. you personally lied to me in my written request to remove my email address from your spam list.

It's fine, though. you, clearly, have enough support here.. have fun.
those who need to see my message, will see it.

I report on my 4th Gen - I don't find the emails excessive and I do find the data that is produced useful. Keep up the good work Michael!

Thanks, Dave.

You kept receiving complaints because the same small number of people kept complaining over and over without providing sufficient information for me to identify their accounts. This doesn't add up to 100+ different people, though perhaps it did in your mind.

We send no spam. You signed up to receive the email you received. You were removed as soon as I knew this was your wish and could identify your account. I never lied to you.
