Sliders are not meant for collision protection. But they do a great job of keeping those beside the trail boulders from denting the sheet metal.

In a moderate side impact, it *seems* that they would provide some side protection, because the slider is about the height of a sedan's bumper and should resist side penetration, at the cost of delivering a sharper impact to the 4Runner.

In a high speed side impact with a full-sized vehicle, the slider could bend upwards in unpleasant and untested ways. This may be a reason why most mods are labeled as being designed for off-road use. This sort of impact is deadly to start with, but the vendor doesn't want to be found as a party at fault.

Good point, the slider might intrude into the cabin area under the right circumstances.

Toyota offered optional rock sliders for the fifth GEN. Looking at their design should give some clues as to what will happen in a collision with another vehicle.

I think Toyota would be well aware of potential liabilities for accessories they offer for sale. The key feature of the Factory rock slider is that it's up close to the rocker panels and recessed flush to the rocker panels. The round tube is 1/8" wall thickness. The factory 1/4" thick mounting brackets, appear to be strongest in the upward force protection, which is the intention of the product as a rock guard. There are no gussets preventing front to back movement.

I found a lightly used set of factory rock rails for my SR5. I prefer the fitment and no leg contact entering or exiting.

I have a 2022 TRD Pro and went with Greenlane Aluminum RockSliders. I live in Iowa and use this as my Hunting Rig. I do travel to Western States annually to hunt Big Game. I ran Full Sized Trucks for 35 plus years and out West I would always get my Doors trail damaged by rocks or logs that would hit my door panel and knock a 3 inch chunk of paint off. Had this happen to both drivers door and passenger door of my GMC Sierra Truck.
I am not a Rock Crawler just an Outdoors man and they provide great protection and don’t rust as I have had mine 3 years.
For Overlanders and Outdoorsmen they are Perfect for weight and protection.
