I had a few ideas for a snorkel I was kicking around before I got started on my bumper. After I'm done I think it may be time to put my concepts to work.

Do elaborate with these ideas. If you can set up an x, y, and z plane off your bumper, you can create you fender in a solidworks or inventor, and design from there. A guy with a third gen did this, and had his pieces made with a 3D printer and then he epoxied em together.

Ok, after a few shot's and beers on a Friday night, here is an idea that might have little merit, but might spark some ideas for the almighty ones on this forum. (Pay attention Antman, 1engineer and Harper7).
Instead of installing a "Permanent" snorkel, what about a Temp? It might solve the aesthetics concerns of some and the cost/benefit concerns of others.
Ok, I do not have the ability to draw or CAD describing this, If however, you have questions please feel free to ask, I might be able to rephrase or....even remember tomorrow!
Start where the OEM CAI enters the wheel well. At that point, from a straight line to the outer steel fender there is what, 4- 6 inches? I am not sure but I know there is room.
Now, on the outside where the Safari or other snorkels require a hole for their products, cut that hole, but place a Gas Cover lid instead. Either an OEM , or one of those great looking NASCAR type covers you can find on the inter-web. Next, (now this is where it gets good), get one of those flexible “Plastic” spring loaded dryer hoses you can find at Sears or? About 6 ft length should do it, and attaché it with a ring clamp to the end of the OEM CAI intake.
When you “actually need it”, simply open the “Gas” cap, extend the hose, (and this part I admittedly have not yet come up with a solution), extend it to the top of the window pillar and clamp it (somehow), you are then good to go. When you are done traversing terrain you were not meant to go through, then you simply un-clamp, the spring loaded retractable hose and close the “Gas Cap”, then go home. Works for me!
For those who like a snorkel for the “dust or dirt” issues, one can add a small filter on the open end when needed. Ok, the end. Be safe.

AFAIK snorkels are designed so that incoming rain will hit the back wall of the intake and then get channeled into specifically designed drains. A lot of snorkel owners turn their intakes backwards to avoid water ingestion. Problem with that is this reversed snorkel head occasionally creates a vacuum effect at higher speeds, reducing intake pressures.

Still glad I was able to be a part of the FTS snorkel gb that [MENTION=64685]TOY2G[/MENTION] put together.
Icon vehicle dynamics just posted up pics of customers 4runner in Taiwan with safari snorkel on Facebook. He is using the one made for the Land Cruiser Prado. Fitment doesn't look too bad at all.

I just Shipped [MENTION=73242]Desert Fox[/MENTION] one of these snorkels a couple days ago for a 4th gen, I don't think it would fit the 5th gen very well at all.... I would have to see it up close.
Taiwan, uses the same model 4Runner we have in the US, so the 5th gen snorkels are pretty easy to come by over there. For instance, we just did a group buy on the FTS snorkels, but i recently found another company there making snorkels for the 5th gen. Kinda makes me wonder why someone there would use a prado snorkel, when there is a direct fit version locally....must be because they wanted ABS not glass.
