5th gen 4Runner: What did Toyota delete from the 4th gen?

So what are you doing here on a 4Runner forum? You've got almost five hundred and fifty posts in one month's time and you're picking apart what people are saying, trying to prove points that you make.

I've been buying Toyota pickups and 4Runners since the late 1970's, I'm in the business, know a few of the folks at Toyota and actually like others here on the forum, step to the plate to buy these vehicles.

I've had to tell a good friend, a GM at a local Toyota dealership that the 2010 improvements are superficial, as they add little or NOTHING to performance or actual off-road or on-road handling/use and the deletion of the Torsen and center diff are HUGE in my book.

Don't tell me about a thread on deletions and improvements! I've been on the forum only three years with less than one-half of the posts you've made in one month.

I've made my case to the factory, both in e-mail, on the phone and on this forum. I've got nothing else to add re: the 2010 until they bring back the Torsen, center diff, six speed auto tranny and possible V8 4.6L.

I'm keeping my cash working in the market rather than forking any more over to Toyota at this moment in time.

Maybe you don't understand me, but just because I'm not in the market for a 5th gen doens't mean that I don't ALREADY own a 4th gen. In fact, I've owned one since 2004 when I purchased it new. And I owned a 3rd gen prior to that. So if you want to know why I'm on the forum, there's your answer. M'kay?

As for your time on the forum, what do you want, a cookie? Congrats for being such a long-time member, but don't make the mistake thinking that you have some sort of higher status or something because you've been a member of the forum for X amount of years/months/days whatever.... stop being such an elitist. As for the thread topic, well, I created this thread and I'm only requesting that you try to keep it on topic (normal forum etiquette) instead of derailing it by discussing the IMPROVEMENTS. If you're such a long time forum member, you should know better and try to keep the thread on topic instead of continually trying to derail it.

Yeah, there's really nothing wrong with talking about the improvements on the 5th gen, but the idea of this thread came about after I read so many people complaining about what was deleted between gens 4 and 5. I wanted to list them all in one thread. Who knows, maybe some Toyota insider will actually read the thread some day and see how much the loyal 4Runner enthusiasts are disappointed with those deletions. As for me, I'll stick with my 4th gen until it's wheels fall off. And by that time, I'll be ready for a 6th or 7th gen. Or if something unexpected happens to my 4Runner before then, I'll most likely jump ship to Jeep land.

Agree with you on all scores exept Jeep Land. Known to many people who think they are fickle demons. I will keep the Beast forever............or until I need a wheelchair (will ask Rook to search for WC Hakkepilittas though)

I've always liked Jeeps. Goes back to my childhood days when my uncle had an old Grand Wagoneer. That thing was an absolute beast and I loved it.

Sure, Jeeps are a different animal than the 4Runner, but I like 'em both!

The comment I made and you took out of context was simply about the improvement(s) being superficial. But you have made such a big-deal out of this one comment I made, in the context of the deletion of the Torsen and center diff, for-get-about-it! You're way too nit-picky for my taste!

Furthermore, I'm no where an elitist when it comes to time on this forum as there are many members here a lot longer.

There's an old adage I learned a long time ago... and this relates to your massive number of posts in a very short time frame: 'God gave us two ears and one mouth, we should use 'em in that ratio'.

:iagree: with the exception of the Jeep part. The domestics doesn't excite me after owning a Chevy. Though some of the new offerings are pretty exciting, but still can't quite see myself in one for the long haul after the "newness" wears off. Autos are a depreciating asset, so I try to keep them for as long as possible.

God forbid, but if my 4R is gone and I need to replace it with a 4WD or something similar, I'm going to get a Tacoma DC 4x4. I'll probably stick with Toyotas even though they've been slipping as of late. I haven't found something else out there that I can see myself in after 3-5yrs, unlike my 4Runner which I'll drive until the wheels fall off or pass on to my kids.

Again, this thread is about deletions, not improvements. So please save your words for another thread. Feel absolutely free to start your own thread to discuss improvements or the lackthereof.

God forbid, but if my 4R is gone and I need to replace it with a 4WD or something similar, I'm going to get a Tacoma DC 4x4. .

Tacomas are nice, but I don't want a pickup myself. If I no other options, I'd probably buy a low-mileage used 4th gen.

Well I just got back from driving my 08 Taco 2wd with Blizzaks and 180llbs of sand in the back in about 9 inches of sloppy snow and it did fine.

I will look at a gen5 limited or maybe a leftover gen 4 when I'm ready. I'm still not sure if I need the full or if I can get away with the part time 4WD. Thanks to all for your comments...........

Tacoma? Nah...not with the recent history of Tacomas and Tundras rusting to hell!! :sobbing: Not to mention that Tacoma and Tundra are now in the minority for NOT having fully-boxed frames! :shrug: Drum brakes?! WTF?! :barf:

Other than the Land Cruiser, the 4runner is about it in terms of my favorite Toyota SUVs & trucks.

Well I just got back from driving my 08 Taco 2wd with Blizzaks and 180llbs of sand in the back in about 9 inches of sloppy snow and it did fine.........

Exactly. Proper winter driving = proper tires. Of course, this is what i have been reading and what i have been taught. Texas does not have a lot of snow for me to test out the theory. Not sure about the 08 Tacoma, but the 5th gen 4runner will also have stability control and traction control (over the rear axle in 2wd mode)...so, it will be even more stable than the tacoma. (I think that Toyota made VSC and TRAC standard on all Tacomas in 2009.)

Nope, ONLY the front end of the Tacoma (from bumper to cabin) is boxed...the rear of the frame is open-channel ("c-frame").

If you can get away with a 2wd truck, you can get away with part-time. You've already learned the most important lesson -- good snow tires. I put snow-tires on my 4Runner as well.

I prefer full-time to part-time, but plenty of people drive around in the winter with part-time.
