5th Gen Audio Help

Forgive me in advance for my complete lack of knowledge here... I have a non-JBL 5th gen and I want to upgrade the speakers.

I dont want to deal with the hassle of swapping head units (Bluetooth, USB, steering wheels controls, etc.) I know it can be done, but right now it doesn't make sense.

I went to a local audio shop that is known to do a great job but very $$$. Below is the setup they thought would be best for my needs (More bass, less "tin" sounding, louder, NO Sub).

Speakers
-Alpine Type R 6x9 Coax for the front doors (SPR-69C)= $135/pair
-Alpine Type R 6.5 coax for the rear doors and tailgate (SPR-17C)= $125/pair = $250 total

AMP
-JL Audio XD600/6 = $499
-JL Audio xd-acs30 = $49.95

Install
$9.60 for wiring
$400 :gun4I think I'm getting hosed here)

Grand TOTAL = 1453.42

What are your thoughts? If it sucks or there is a better option please elaborate!

You should be able to find the speakers/amps on the net (just for comparisons sake) to see if you're getting a decent deal.

As for the work, I'm willing to bet they will need to pull the dash/head unit to wire everything up. That can be expensive and it's probably why they're charging $400 on that part. Just as a "loose" comparison, my dealer had to replace the evaporator for my AC in my dash. To tear that all out was $600+. (all under warranty... whoo hoo)

So in my opinion... if you don't want to do the work yourself, I might wait to see if I want anything else done so that you can get it all done at once. I'm no expert so anyone please correct me if I'm wrong. Speakers are EASY... amps/crossovers are fairly simple also since they will likely be mounted somewhere more accessible. The hardest part of the job, and why they're prolly charging you 400 bones is pulling the head unit to wire your amps up to it. If you knew how to do it yourself, I'd probably do it just to save on that labor. But to each his own.

I would say the install price is about normal. They are going to have to most likely pull off each door panel (granted, i haven't looked at a 5th gen) just to get to each speaker, solder those in and do any custom work for fitment since aftermarket doesn't always use the same mounting points, then wire the amp which can be a pain depending on the mounting location and wire routing. The amp seems a little excessive to me. 75 watts rms is quite a bit imo. I run my speakers off the head unit with 22 watts rms, and it's plenty loud and crisp. But overall what they're suggesting would sound great and each of the products you listed is on the higher end of quality, so you know they're good products. Just depends if you want to dish out the $1500 for that. You could start with just speaker replacement/no amp just to see if that changes the sound enough for you and always add the amp later. Just my .02
