5th gen brake backing plate?

Does anyone know if the 5th gen backing plates for are a direct bolt on? I’m changing to 5th gen brakes now that I need brakes due to frozen calipers and other issues. While looking the existing brakes over, I noticed that my driver’s side backing plate in front is badly rusted, and half is pretty much missing. Passenger side had been replaced at some point, but I was thinking that since the 4th gen plates need to be bent/modified to work with the 5th gen brakes, I may as well just use the correct backing plate if it will be a direct fit. Has anyone done this before? Or, would I be better off just getting a 4th gen replacement and modifying it?

Get backing plates for a 4th gen sport or a Lexus gx470. Those both have the sixlze you need and will be a guaranteed fit

Thanks, that’s probably a safer bet! I have a 2004, do you know if I can just get the sport version of that year, or should I choose a different year? Just wondering if all 4th gen years were the same for the sport model.

X2....I upgraded my '05 Sport with gen 5 brakes on all 4 corners and experienced no problems with the stock backing plates. :thumb:

Nice! It would be a waste to buy a new plate that I’d have to cut and bend, so this is the way I’ll go. I haven’t had the front apart yet, but I’m guessing I’ll have to remove the bearing to replace the backing plate - right?

Well. Not the bearing but the hub assembly that holds the bearing yes. The four bolt that hold the hub assembly on also hold the backing plate.

Thanks. Not a huge deal in itself, but now it leaves me with the thought that maybe I should change the bearing and seal since it will be apart already. That sucks, because I wasn’t looking to spend more money at this time, but at the very least I’ll be able to closely inspect it anyway, and then decide from there.

It's not a big job. It just comes down to what is your time worth? It'll cost you $300-400 for a pair of prebuilt hubs with bearings. If they are not bad, i would wait. but that me.

I was actually thinking of ordering the new hubs and bearings separately since I have a press and adapters to put them together (used to build IRS knuckles for Cobra replicas which are similar in design). The reason being that the factory studs are a bit shorter than I’m comfortable with on my new wheels. There is only around 1/2” of thread engagement. I’m thinking at this point, I should just bite the bullet and do both sides since one has to come apart completely anyway, and press in longer wheel studs while I’m in there just for added safety.
