5th Gen Brake Failure - 17 TRDP

Truck is at the dealership, made sure to communicate that I am aware of others having this same issue. I will wait and see what they have to say. In the meantime I have submitted a complaint via NHTSA as the more documentation we have publicly available the less pain others may have to endure if they unfortunately experience this.

So kind of as expected...

Dealer says they cant find an issue after running tests and driving it. I asked my Service advisor if he would safe putting his family in it to which he replied "Absolutely not!" and then promptly called Toyota USA to report the issue. After a minute on the phone Toyota put a hold on my vehicle and is sending someone out to look at it and resolve the issue. Should take a few days for the tech to arrive and diagnose the problem.

I don't want to clog up the thread but it makes me wonder how many of these go unreported to not only this forum but also to Toyota.

The other big issue is when this happens and causes a accident never mind if people die in that accident and it gets blamed on user error. Toyota could be killing people if thats the case and getting away with it.

Apologize for delayed response - business travel. I will send my VIN to you on private message and dealership where I went through all of this so you can quote facts.

Sounds exactly what I experienced to include dealership response. I was polite through entire exchange over the month they had my runner. Would ask them to check all codes. Also give them complete description of incident include detailed road conditions.......they were probing for a washboard surface that could cause an ABS initiation - soft pedal. Not the case as I was on flat-clear and dry surface. Give then date/time to compare codes initiated at same time.

Home late tomorrow so look for detailed message Friday

Sorry, I’m not following your train of thought here. Are you suggesting he not let them attempt repairs or are you suggesting he sucks up a serious safety flaw if the repairs don’t correct the issue?

New member here, and I swear by my 4Runner, but this brake scare sounds alot like what happened to my mother-in-law in her '08 4th Gen several years ago. It has me concerned/wondering, did your ride give you any feedback or indication leading up to that day that this would happen when you pressed the brake pedal?

This reminds me of "ice mode" in BMW E36 M3s. In rare, very rare cases, the ABS would think it was on ice, and braking would all but disappear. I had this happen twice on a race track, and gong into a 40 mph corner at 100 mph is far more excitement than I like.

It was not repeatable, it appeared to be a combination of vehicle loading and quickness of brake application. Unload a tire or two just right, hit the brakes hard, and voila!! No brakes! To get the BMW bakes back, you had to let off of them entirely, and they would normally return. But obviously, your lap time was shot at that point!! :frusty: Luckily for me, I somehow recognized the issue and let off the brakes and got back on them to keep it on the track.

Due to the randomness and number of folks it has happened to, it sounds similar. A very specific set of circumstances line up just so, brakes applied in just the right manner, and voila, no brakes. But no obvious failure. Also, extremely difficult to diagnose.

No warning. Driving normally, applied brakes, felt it pop and pedal went to floor.

Flat road, dry pavement when it happened. Very familiar with suspension bump with a solid rear axle and this was not the case.

I am very familiar with the BMW and Porsche "ice mode" issues on the race track under very specific conditions. When I lost brakes in my 4Runner it was more like what Hadelson describes, brakes bit for a split second then the pedal just went to the floor and i flew right through an intersection.

I have my 4Runner back now from the dealership. Corporate mechanics had their way with it. Basically all of the braking parts except for lines, calipers rotors and pads have been replaced. They were unable to pinpoint the issue and told me good luck with the new parts. All of that being said I dont really know how I feel about driving my family around in it now. I suppose it will just take time for me to develop some trust in it again and I will hope that we dont have a relapse of the issue.

All of the parts that were taken off of my truck were sent away for analysis. To me this sounds like Toyota is aware that there is some sort of issue and they are trying to pinpoint it in order to issue a TSB/recall

I just got my 18 TRDP 700 miles ago and I’m immensely interested in this thread. If anyone gets any real answers please update the rest of us. I sure as hell don’t want my brakes to take a dump when I need them!

Good luck to all. This concerns me too, but I guess I settled for the SR5. Maybe that was a good thing after all. Generally I have TRDP envy. Maybe not so much now.

100% agree with your thoughts. Toyota did identical replacement with my 4Runner. I think they know there is something definitely happening and they are trying to figure out what it is before it becomes a huge public issue.
