5th gen brakes

Greetings,

I recently upgraded to the larger sport size rotors and calipers on my 03 SR5 and was totally underwhelmed in the increased braking performance. I did the Centric rotors, calipers, and pads and fully flushed the system. I recently noticed that the 5th gens have caliper pistons that are 3 mm larger than the 4th gens, and slightly thicker rotors, but with essentially the same pads (although the pads have different OEM part #s).

Any educated thoughts on whether this would help my stopping power? I have a fair amount of weight on my rig, thus why I am always trying to improve.

Press the pedal harder or get nicer pads. With nice pads and a leg that works/ good pedal foot the limiting factor will be traction. The math says that the bigger pistons will reduce the pedal force required to get to coefficient of friction cross over point (lock up/ABS). Moral of the story, it's easier to press harder or swap pads than lots of money and brake bleeding for a very small gain.

The only other gains from the 5th gen swap are increased rotor width which may help prevent warping, and the so far unproven increased reliability.

How do you figure its lots of money swapping out the calipers and rotors? Its already costing gobs of money for 4th gen owners replacing calipers and rotors every years. i have a 08 runner replaced all the calipers twice, I have a 2011 4runner and haven't to this day replaced any seems fairly proven so far
 
OP's question was relating to new and properly working sport sized calipers rotors and wanting more stopping power. Unfortunately he's already spent the $$ for new calipers and rotors so was trying to help him avoid doing that again for not much gain. Now if you've got shot rotors and seized up calipers then sure I don't see why there would be much price difference in 4th/5th gen parts. But I wouldn't use performance alone to justify it.

Also maybe I'm bitter that I just did new 4th gen parts a few months ago before this 5th gen discovery came out and have a spare pair of sport calipers sitting on my shelf just in case! lol

Fair enough Im fortunate enough that I can burn the brakes and rotors out in less then two months :whoo: Very hard braking and very high speeds at times. Its the one complaint the work mechanic has with my brakes rotors and tie rods from the very tight fast uturns i seem to do ALOT hehe
