Even if they do wind up having the same problems as 4th gens, having larger pistons / greater stopping ability will be worth it.

I am interested in knowing if the 5th gen calipers are the same as the 4th gen sport. I upgraded my 4th gen SR5 calipers and rotors last year to the bigger sport version, and would be good to know if I am already at 5th gen.

I just ordered everything to do this upgrade. With all of the experience on this forum with the re-man 4th gen calipers still continuing to have frozen calipers, I'll give this a try.

I ordered the centric calipers and rotors, and Toyota OEM pads. Does anyone know if the toyota pads need a shim kit? I thought i remember seeing that they did, or maybe they have been updated?

Here are the Centric 5th Gen Caliper vs. 4th Gen Caliper via Rockauto. Looks like the 5th are indeed 3mm larger in piston size.

Also the rotors are 1mm taller in height and 4.3mm thicker

This is a great find! Getting the feeling that my calipers are starting to stick again (need to actually check). For the negligible price difference and the possibility of eliminating the issue for good on top of the benefit of larger pistons this seems like a no brainer.

Did my first brake job on my truck since
Front and rear calipers are direct fit / bolt on.
Rotors fit without modifications
4th and 5th gen 4Runners share the same brake pads

Calipers are almost identical. Each pistons are 3mm larger
Rotors are 13.30". Only difference with the rotors are the fronts are thicker meaning less chances of rotor warping and better cooling

Other than that, brake power increased but the best is not having to deal with seized brake calipers.

Where did you find the information that the pad's for 4th gen and 5th are the same? The toyota part numbers are different when I looked them up for the pads. Just curious because I'm doing this upgrade and want just want to make sure I have all the correct parts.

I just did a quick search of some aftermarket stores (Napa, O'Reilly, Autozone) and the part numbers were the same for 2014 & 2003 front brake pads. Where applicable, I did punch in Limited for the 2003, as that's what I have, and Trail for 2014.


084RUNNAH, you obviously have wheel spacers installed. Do the later model calipers protrude any further than the originals?
I guess what I am asking is will they interfere at all with OEM wheels? I guess we will find out soon enough with everyone wanting to do this (including myself).

I just called Toyota and had the parts guy pull a front/rear pad set for my 2006 sport and a front/rear pad set for a 2015 SR5. He said the pads match up and are all the same even though there are different part numbers. He added the 2015 pads are cheaper because they're the current model.

If you guys want, I can remove my spacers and try out if they fit. I know it didn't click to try it out but I don't mind doing it this weekend for you guys.

Pads are the same. Not sure why Toyota have different part numbers for the pads. Maybe Toyota is using different pad material for the different gens?

Update:

Loving the smooth braking. Had to do an emergency stop today on my way home. Unbelievable! Other than the truck bowing forward, I'm loving it. Maybe lift the front or stiffer springs up front?

So i guess the question is, are the bigger pistons better or would it be better to have the larger rotor that you get with the 4th gen limited upgrade.

Edit: Just noticed you already have a limited. So I guess if you are going from a non limited the 5th gens are the way to go. Figures I just did the limited upgrade on mine literally a couple of weeks ago.

If you don't mind. I'm planning on ordering everything but that is the only thing holding me up. I have a Sport Edition though so I think I will be ok with the stock wheels. I know a lot of people including myself don't run spacers though. Thanks a lot man.

I have to do my fronts. I have 2005 Limited v6. If I do not go with rockauto, what year should i tell counter guy at Napa to get parts for? As long as I have 17 wheels this will work?

And you don't have spidertrax? Do you have stock wheels? Not sure if the OP ever got around to testing it out without the spidertrax.

Sorry.... So I have 1.25 spacers and aftermarket wheels, so cant help with fitment. As far as parts I looked around at local parts stores and everything was special order.
