5th Gen Calipers

I would personally use the 4th gen rotor rather than the 5th gen rotor. I believe the center bore is different which may cause a problem
 
I am definitely getting that annoying pulsing feeling. Is there any way to be sure if it is coming from the front or the rear? I don't feel it through the steering wheel at all, but there is an uneven stopping feeling that feels rotational.

I am assuming that since I am not feeling anything through the steering wheel my problem is likely the rears. Is this a logical assumption?

I don't mind spending money to fix the problem, but I would rather not drop $450 on all new front brakes for no reason. There is decent life left on the front pads and rotors.

Most places offer a free brake inspection. Just go to a local shop and explain what's going on and ask them to check it out. That's how I determined mine were toast.

LEXUS GX470 (2003 - 2009)
TOYOTA 4RUNNER (2010 - 2015)
TOYOTA SEQUOIA (2001 - 2007)

I guess if we look up SEQUOIA rear calipers, we will know if they seize alot. I guess this was a good solution or else they would have used it twice? I believe the lexus gx470 is very similar to the 4th gen 4runner?

Im still on the fence for doing a 5th upgrade. call me by the book guy... I found out today that my rear calipers seals are starting to go bye bye.

anyone with issues? I don't want to go with 4th gen if they are going to fail again.

Just clarifying— The entire post has been about exchanging 4th Gen brakes for 5th Gen brakes and here, near the end of the post, the recommendation is to stay with 4th Gen rotors, NOT 5th Gen rotors. Correct?

Going to make the change in the next few weeks and just want to be clear.

I'm running the 5th gen rotors and in happy to keep everyone posted if I experience any issues. So far in over 3000 miles with them and nothing but perfect braking to report
 
Just ordered, went with 142 series in the back, they guarantee all ware items + piston is replaced, as well as all it comes painted so no more pesky rust. not bad for 20 dollars more. found a 5 % coupon from rock auto.

I edited this post because I mistakenly thought we were discussing if the front rotor center bore is the same between a 4th gen and a 5th gen 4Runner. They are, I took measurements.

However, the previous page is discussing rear rotor differences between the 4th gen and 5th gen, which do appear to have different center bore sizes. I didn't upgrade the rear brakes on my truck so I can't verify the measurements for the rear rotors. Sorry for the confusion.

In my opinion, if you are doing the rear brake upgrade, you should stick with 4th Gen rotors. For the front, I recommend 5th Gen rotors.

I'd like to respectfully disagree on the 5th Gen rotor center bore being different, at least on a 4x4 V8 Limited with 319mm rotors from the factory.

I just did the conversion this afternoon with Centric reman 5th Gen calipers and Centric e-coat 5th Gen rotors. I measured the hub bore diameter with machinist calipers, and the width between the lug openings on both the 319mm 4th Gen rotor vs the 5th Gen rotor. Every measurement was the same, including the thickness of the rotor hub material.

Take a look at my Imgur album of the measurements and the info sheet from Centric for the 2004 rotor vs the 2015 rotor (pictures are crap but you'll get the idea):

At least for me, with my 04 4x4 V8 Limited, the 5th Gen rotors bolted right up. I had to bend the dust shield in a couple of spots, and I cut a small amount off the shield near the caliper but even that could have been bent out of the way if I wanted to.

any pics on where you had to adjust?, this was the rear?

I have a 2006 4x4 v8 SR5, "my rear rotors are in good condition, so according to your post, there's no need to replace them and the 5th gen calipers WILL work on the 4th gen rear rotors? Correct?

Thanks for posting some objective data. Not sure what the hesitancy is on the part of the OP.

I forgot to take a picture of the shield. I only did the front calipers and rotors.

The "top" part of the shield right by the caliper rubs against the larger rotors. You could bend it like 90 degrees to make it clear the rotor, but I just cut a small triangle of material off of the shield to make sure it clears. The rest of the shield I bent with a vice grips. I used a Dremel with a cutoff wheel to trim the shield. It's pretty easy material to get through.

Sorry I wasn't clear in my post, I'm only referring to the front calipers and rotors. I did not do the rear conversion.
 
Unfortunately I seem to be the newest member of the "I can bleed brakes on every vehicle but a 4th Gen 4Runner" crew. :frusty:

I don't want to derail the thread but my only hesitation on doing this upgrade was having to bleed the brakes afterwards. I have the FSM, I've read every thread and every recommendation on how to bleed the brakes, but my pedal still feels worse than before I did the upgrade.

Thankfully I only live 3 miles from the dealer, so I'm going to limp it there tonight to have them bleed it. I want to do the rear upgrade and stainless lines in the spring so I'll order a knockoff Toyota scan tool on eBay and see if that gives any better results.

make sure the bleeder valves are on top. or else the air cant escape.

did you make a one man bleeder?

Bleeders are on top. I used speed bleeders up front. I'm going to try the two person method before driving it to the dealer, but the hose was bubble free so I don't think anything was getting sucked back in.
