5th Gen Features/Models/Differences

Update -- the salesman got back to me and is telling me that it is "dealer installed". Does that sound right?

BTW I thought I understood it is NOT an option for the non-premium TRD Off Road. Seems funny if it is dealer installed. . . though I know they seem to have their idiosyncracies about which options are available with which colors, etc etc.

Thanks for the replies!

:thanks:

They could do dealer installed...just like Joe-schmoe down the street could cut a hole in your roof.

You want a "factory installed" moonroof. That means they did it in Japan.

OK talked to the salesman today and got things cleared up. As you guys have said, it is indeed factory installed and so when they come in he will see if he can find a dealer trade. Barring that happening I will just wait.

Who knew it would be so challenging?

Over the past month or so we have had quite the influx of either new 4Runner owners or those looking to purchase. With them in mind I wanted to start a thread listing the DIFFERENCES between models.

For example: A LE is the only model that you can get full time four wheel drive. A TE model is the only model with KDSS, etc. Some items shouldn't be listed as differences like wheels because wheels are easy to order and install across models. Skids are another item that is easy to change for example.
I think it would muddy the water so to speak if we broke it out in the "Premium" or "Non Premium" models so we will keep it at pretty much ANY major differences between the SR5, TE, TRD Pro and LE. This means you might have to buy the "Premium" edition of the model but you can get it with that model.
So to get it started with the basic differences between models:

2015 SR5
-Conventional Suspension
-Part time 4WD avaiable
-All standard features and convenience packages

2015 TE can have all features (or deletions) that can be had on a SR5 and
-KDSS Suspension
-Multi Mode 4WD controls
-Rear E Locker
-Hood Scoop
-Front and rear TE specific plastic cladding
-Lever actuated Automatic Disconnecting Differential instead of Electric Actuated.
-Contrasting seat stitching
-Interior trim cladding a darker color.
*Delete sunglass holder
*Delete 3rd Row Seating

2015 TRD Pro can have all the features (or deletions) that can be had on a TE and
-TRD Pro Conventional suspension
-Orange Paint Color
-TRD Pro Badging (includes the front grille sleeve and Toyota logo)
*Delete KDSS Suspension
*Delete Sunroof

2015 LE model can have all the features that can be had on the SR5 and
-Push button start
-LE specific body cladding
-XREAS Suspension
-Full Time 4WD available
-Auto Headlights
-Dual Automatic Climate Controls
-JBL Sound and Speakers
-Leather trimmed seating
-Ventilated seats
-Keyless Touch Entry
-Memory Driver's seat
-Wood grain Interior
-Powered Running Boards

These are options that would be either expensive or difficult to add unlike wheels or skids. What am I missing?

Is ATRAC not on here because it is on all T4Rs?

Definitive TE features

It sounds like you have done some homework so I will give you that, but most of this has been covered many times before (as you said) I can relate though sometimes its hard to weed through the answers until ..you have an established knowledge base. With that said, see red below

This tells me almost all I need. I decided what I want (low mileage used Trail model because of KDSS and must-have locking rear diff) and I'm going to a dealer because of my credit union financing, but find that the salespeople are not knowledgeable and supposed Trail models turn out to be SR5 or Ltd.

Is there one easy-to-verify feature I can ask them to check that definitively makes it a Trail? I don't care about clocks, decals or upholstery, but I want that factory locker. Sounds like if it has a 4WD shift lever NOT a knob, then I get the locker, and along with it the KDSS and sun-or-moonroof.

I know badging is an unreliable indicator because my beloved 98 LTd w/ locker never even had a 4WD badge. It has gone 330k and still runs great, but I'm losing confidence about long solo drives in remote places. And appearance wise, the wife needs a new ride...

Thank you.

Try quickly jamming the accelerator all the way to the floor, and holding it there, it'll move (and whatever you do, don't do the same with the brake pedal, otherwise you may find yourself exiting the windshield).

Hi all,

I am currently shopping for a 4Runner trying to decide between Trail Premium and Limited. I tried Limited and acceleration was just awful - I floored the pedal but the car looked very hesitant to even respond. Currently I own the Pathfinder 2015 4wd. And my Pathfinder is much quicker to accelerate than the 4Runner. However, I checked the specs and it says that the 4Runner 2016 and my PF both have almost same time 0-60MPH: 7.7 vs 7.4s. So I would assume they should accelerate very similar. When I tried the 4R it felt like something was holding it or like its engine was gas starving.
I hope something was simply wrong with that particular 4Runner. What else could it be? Did anyone else experience same issues?
And the thing is - that PFs (they have CVT) are not that fast themself, but, compared to the 4Runner, I could feel a huge difference.
Any comments would be really appreciated since I sit on a fence now.

If they can verify that you have a shift lever (not knob) and a sunroof, then you're pretty close to your requirements. Next thing would be for you to go down there and make sure that it has KDSS. It's a shame that these dealerships can't provide you with the requisite info up front. Good luck! I have a '12 TE w/KDSS and absolutely love it so far.

I understand the trail edition is the only model with the Rear E Locker and the regular models have the 4WD you can engage and disengage, but do the regular models have even a center differential to lock at all? Or do you have to get the trail edition to get any type of locking differential?

If time isn't a huge factor, have your dealer order one up built the way you want it. I figured if I'm dropping $40K on the thing it's going to be EXACTLY the way I want it to be. After all, I'll be driving it for the next 15-20 years.

What are the significant advantages/disadvantages of the KDSS system over the conventional SR5 4wd system?

Just to clarify, as I see a lot of conflicting info on here about two things. I'll clarify now:

1) TRD Off Road and TRD Off Road Premiums can come WITH and WITHOUT KDSS.

2) TRD Off Road and TRD Off Road Premiums can come WITH and WITHOUT moonroof.

How do I know this? I drove myself nuts looking for a new 2017 ORP with KDSS and without moonroof.

The problem a lot of people are probably running into on the Toyota website is that it is going by REGION. A LOT of people are not taking the time to read the
lovely consolidation post by 1engineer for new or prospective owners:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...ner-owner-need-help-searching-start-here.html

Under that, is this tantalizing little read:

In SoCal, most of the of the Off Road Premiums have the moonroof. It is damn hard to find one without. Also, buyer beware, a fair number of "TRD PROS" are dealer assembled Pros. I found at least 3 dealerships that were ordering TRD Off Road Premiums without KDSS, buying the TRD PRO parts and installing them on them and selling them labeled as TRD PRO. Check the spec sheets though and you'll see they're not.

As said above, not 4WD related. KDSS gives you the best of both worlds when it comes to on-road and off-road in regard to sway bars. You get big fat bars that help the vehicle stay flat in corners. You also get the skinny sway bar effect when off-roading to allow full articulation. It comes with small weight and complexity compromises, as well as limiting what you can do as far as lifts, but for the stock truck wheeler, it is a great setup.

Sr5: transfer case, no center diff. If 4WD is engaged, the front to rear split is "locked" at 50:50. No tight turning on dry pavement. Open front and rear diff.

Trail/TRD OR/TRD Pro: same as above, except add a locking rear diff (splits the rearward torque 50:50 left and right). Open front diff.

Limited: center diff, full time 4WD Transfer case. When center diff is unlocked, torque can vary from front to rear. When locked, it is a 50:50 split front to rear. Open front and rear diffs.

All have ATRAC which does its best at approximating locked front and rear diffs.

Just to show what I was talking about.... take this snippet from SoCal (San Diego area, specifically)....

The package on the left, the "Keep it Wild Savings" with -$750 is missing KDSS AND moonroof, and is essentially the baseline Off Road Premium. It has the bare bones features of the OR version, plus softex seats and the signals in the mirrors.

The one in the middle, has moonroof, but no KDSS. The one on the right, KDSS but no moonroof.

The problem is... finding one in inventory just like that. That's where you're going to have to do some hunting.

As for seeing what's basically on the vehicles, 1engineer's first post covered that (mostly). The 4Runner pamphlet from Toyota covers the baseline for each type on their brochure on page 17 and 18. Please note the fine print under the pictures where it says "Adds to or replaces features on..."

When I was shopping I found one with no kdss and no moonroof. It was like 38k sticker price. Pretty tough combo to come by.

I found a couple like that in SoCal and AZ when I was shopping around. In at least 3 of the cases, the dealers were planning to convert them into "TRD PRO's" by adding on the optional suspension, front grill, wheels, etc. They were by far the exception though. Most of the ORP were with moonroof and no KDSS, or with KDSS and moonroof.

The really fun thing was asking them about the wheels. 3-4 month backorder, which made me wonder how they were converting these into "TRD PRO". My guess was that the dealers had acquired them previously and had them set aside specifically for their builds, and were not going to part with the wheels for anything, unless you bought their new vehicle. Which makes sense as the mark-ups I saw were at least $5000 over the MSRP. The dealer I got my ORP from had looked into it and found the regional distro was holding on to a small number of the TRD PRO wheels for insurance claims.
